Top cop calls for public help

Chief Supt. Dave Keller
CHIEF Supt Dave Keller today said police were doing their job to tackle gun crime and he called for the community to do their bit.

As well as the secret operation to catch Amos and Joyce, officers also launched Operation Starlight and Operation Pepper - which consist of extra armed and unarmed police on the streets of Hulme, Moss Side, Longsight and Old Trafford. Three people have so far been arrested and two guns seized as a direct result.

Mr Keller said: "Gun crime is quite rightly a great deal of concern. But the police can't solve gun crime alone. We need the community to give us information about who has got the guns and where they are.

"I don't want to hear people saying the police are doing nothing. We are doing everything we can but we need people to help and trust us.

"In 99.9 per cent of cases people who give us information do not have to appear in court. We can just take their information and act on it. If they do appear in court their identities can be concealed.

"If you give us information the whole community will be a safer place to be."

What do you think? Have your say.

Just to be clear there are no "extra" officers. There are officers who have been removed from other areas. Those areas will no doubt suffer as a result. GMP has reduced the number of officers replacing them with Community Support Officers and we suffer as a result.

Before the police can ask for assistance dont you think the police should be seen to be doing their job in our communities?I dont live in mosside but i know people in general are not too impressed with the police and lack of policing in general.I know from past experience that when you phone for assistance you dont always get it,At times you cannot rely on the police ,and where i live we dont see many policemen .only at asda getting their dinner.

Highly visible uniformed police officers with a power of arrest are needed, not just PCSO's so as to make up the numbers.
Recent publication of PCSO statistics reveal that on average they detect 1 crime every 6 years and issue some form of fixed penalty notice every 4 months, hardly effective policing!
On an average wage of £24,000 per annum, just how can this be justified, it is commonplace to see them walking around in groups of 3, thereby further reducing their supposed 'high profile presence'

The people of Greater Manchester deserve an effective police force, its time for a review and shake up of the PCSO role and consider their removal from areas where they are least effective, thats if its possible to be any more ineffective.

Mr Keller may have his hands tied with the issues surrounding PCSO's, but he must try and free himself from those constraints, otherwise his pleas for assistance will fall on stoney ground!

If GMP's press officer is reading this, take note, we are not blind or stupid, feed it back to Mr Keller or Chester House command!

Ace, the other week I had only praise for the Police. They turned up in 5 minutes at a deserted windswept Stalybridge station, because some "scallywag" had gone outside the buffet bar to light up a cigarette.
