POLICE had to clear a section of Manchester's Heaton Park after workmen unearthed an unexploded wartime shell in the garden of a home nearby.
Bomb disposal squad officers were called from Liverpool when the shell was discovered at the rear of a property being renovated on Hill Lane, Blackley.
After assessing the danger, the officers decided to transport it to a quiet area of Heaton Park where it could be safely detonated.
Police confirmed that a controlled explosion had been carried out after they had cordoned off the area around the Sheepfoot Lane entrance to the park and moved people to safety.
