The cube was at Albert Square to raise awareness of energy conservation. The average person in Manchester releases 11 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.
More than 1,000 people signed the cube committing themselves to cutting their annual emissions.
Nigel Alcock, from energy company npower which brought the cube, said it helped people to visualise the impact on the atmosphere.
He said: "Energy efficiency remains the best method for reducing CO2 emissions.
"This can be done through simple measures such as switching off unused equipment and making sure PCs and lights are switched off every night."
The initiative was backed by the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and campaign group Manchester Is My Planet.

Last time I used the government's online CO2 emission calculation tool I was told my annual emissions from my home, appliance useage, travel to work & holidays was less than 6 tonnes per annum.
Looks like either their 'average' is way out or other folk need to get their own house in order before berating me for driving to work!
