Three people were taken to hospital and junction 4 clockwise was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.
The collision involved a VW Golf, a black VW Bora and a Vauxhall Vectra all travelling clockwise on the motorway.
The driver of the Bora had to be cut from his wrecked car by firemen.
