Mary Murphy was prompted to speak out against Manchester's gun culture by the death of her son Colin and has since become a councillor representing Hulme.
Colin, 24, died in 1992 in a fire as he hid in a derelict house after being chased by thugs with a gun.
No one was ever charged with his death and an inquest recorded an open verdict.
Coun Murphy, who works with police representing her community, says recent shootings have shocked residents.
She said: "I am very shaken by the news, the whole community is. We have seen an increase in violence in the last few weeks. It reminds me of the year my son died - there were four killings that year.
"It is a very small minority of people in our community involved in crime. Young people are scared, they are frightened by the violence. Some young people are getting involved in this culture and, when they do, they distance themselves from the community but they are not separate from the community, they live with their families. The people around them must be suspicious.
"We would say to people if you suspect someone you know is using guns then you should tell someone, they can tell the police or tell me - you don't need to give your name, just enough detail so the police have something to investigate.
"I would say to people if you are not working against these gangs you are colluding with them, supporting them by doing nothing." Tweet

To say thay Mary Murphy is an anti gun campaigner is a bit of an exageration. This manchester councillor is nothing more than a fervent self depricating martyr and self publicist of the highest order.
In the context of recent shootings there is very little similarity between her own experience than those of actual gang warfare in Manchester.
Sadly, she trots out the same mantra on numerous occasions and bores everyone in the community and her own Labour Party with the same old story which is more a call to reinforce her self indulgent self pity and ego than it is about her son or any victim.
There are councillors in Longsight, Ardwick and Moss Side who represent people where these shootings occur, but you can bet your bottom dollar that if there is a TV reporter or journalist about then her story will hit the headlines before any other councillor in the relevant area can pick up the phone.
All in all, her caterwaling about her experience has made no impact whatsoever on the current situation.
I know this councillor as a caring individual, but she does have a reputation for jumping on the proverbial bandwagon and linking into issues which do not concern her on other folks patches.
Anyway, perhaps she should focus on the elderly as last week an old woan tried to get hold of her and did not reply to her calls. Too busy with glamour and TV reporters.
