Jones honoured at awards

Councillor Roger Jones
THE architect of the proposed congestion charge has been awarded for his committment to public transport.

Councillor Roger Jones, chair of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, was honoured at the National Transport Awards.

He was singled out by judges to receive an award for his `Outstanding Contribution to Local Transport' at a ceremony in London.

The audience heard that Cllr Jones, who represents Irlam on Salford council, had demonstrated `conviction and courage at local level' in his pursuit of public transport improvements.

He was congratulated for his commitment to improving local bus services and `crusade in support of an extension to his city's light rail system, Metrolink.'

Councillor Jones is spearheading Greater Manchester's bid for a £3b investment in public transport which would be mainly funded by charging drivers for using the roads at peaks hours. At 2012 prices, this could be as much as £8 per day.

Chair of the judging panel, transport expert Professor David Begg, said: "Over the years, Roger Jones has shown a passionate support for public transport.

Articulated

"Most recently he has articulated a powerful case why charging motorists for using congested road space tied to a step change in public transport provision is right for the economy and the environment in his area.

"The judges single out someone for this award who has shown conviction and courage at local level in pursuing an agenda that is right from a policy perspective but which is tough politically. This year's winner ticks both boxes."

Councillor Jones said: "I am honoured to receive this award. It is a privilege to act as chair for GMPTA at this exciting time in transport and to push for such a major investment in Greater Manchester's public transport network.

"I would not be doing my job properly if I didn't take a vocal lead on our Transport Innovation Fund bid."

Greater Manchester's Transport Innovation Fund bid, due to be considered by Greater Manchester leaders later this month, could lead to a £3 billion investment in Greater Manchester's public transport network over the next few years, as well as the introduction of a limited congestion charge.

The only award Jones deserves is one for ignoring public opinion and denying the Greater manchester pblic a democratic say on the Toll Tax plans.

So Jones gets an award from David Begg for fighting for transport investment. Thats rich. I heard David Begg with my own ears say that investing in transport infrastructure of any kind should be a last resort. So Begg, when he was head of the Commission for Integrated Transport, was instrumental in blocking the manchester metro for so long. Only now that it can be used as a carrot to force through road pricing to punish the wicked private motorist is it back on the agenda.

Sick.

NATIONAL Transport Awards, you say??

Thought it was all in the hands of private companies now. With the obvious exception of London.

So what was his award A Life Long Pass allowing him free travel throughout Gtr Manchester and exempting him from the Congestion Charge - Can we please get this straight - we are not bidding for £3billion - £2billion is a LOAN to be repaid over the next 30 years. Anyone can get that. Central Government is bending over backwards to LEND money with the interest it attracts so how come Jolly Roger gets an award - Where is the investment over the LAST TEN YEARS in public transport. Frittered away, but he still had £500,000 sitting in the bank ready to pay for that piece of fictional garbage in the form of the GMPTE Leaflet - OUR FUTURE TRANSPORT - The man is a menace and should be sacked immdediately by GMPTA and also resign his position as Councillor for Irlam - WHAT PUBLIC TRANSPORT IMPROVEMENTS ARE COMING SALFORDS WAY - Answer - NONE

I dont really know how Jolly Roger got in at the locals, I live in Irlam and cannot find anyone who admits to voting for this man.I think people are ashamed to admit they voted for him.One thing for sure he will not be in next time.

He traced a line in red crayon around the M60, wrote charge next to it and he gets an award?

I should move into politics... With an IQ in triple figures, the awards wouldn't stop rolling in.

Just looked at Salford website again.Jolly Roger is due to retire in 2008,then what a nice cushy title and job.

And such equisite timing too. Just as the whole scheme comes up for a crucial vote, one of it's prime movers gets this sychophantic award.

Wonder if they'll next try to pursuade us that "half of all Greater Manchester" thinks he deserves it.

This should not read:

"£3 billion investment in Greater Manchester's public transport network"

It should read:

"Leaves a legacy of 1.8Billion pounds of debt to the local people of Manchester"

Congratulations on your award.

I don't know how you have the guts or bare faced cheek to accept it.

Don't you feel at least a bit ashamed? Deep down you must know that you don't deserve it. Only you will ever know just how much you don't deserve it.

Can you live with yourself?

Buy the time this comes in, you'll be well on your way to a free bus and tram pass and won't need to work, so it won't affect you.

Thanks for stitching us up like kippers, 'cos something certainly smells fishy to me !

What body is giving out these awards anyway? For all we can tell from this story it's readers of the TV Times! Who were the judges, apart from "transport expert Professor David Begg"? Ken Livingston perhaps?
