Uni honour for police chief

Tarique Ghaffur CBE with his honorary degree of Doctor of Law received from MMU
BRITAIN'S most senior Asian police officer has been honoured in Manchester for his community relations work.

Tarique Ghaffur CBE was awarded an honorary doctorate from Manchester Metropolitan University at a ceremony at Bridgewater Hall.

An assistant commissioner for the Metropolitan Police in London, he started his career as a bobby in Greater Manchester, where he still lives.

Despite leaving school without A levels, he eventually earned a degree in public administration from MMU.

Today the married father-of-two is a strong voice in calls for a strengthening of community relations amid the threat from terrorists.

At a conference in Manchester last year, he spoke about the dangers of stereotyping Muslims when dealing with terrorist threats.

Bernard Leach, of MMU, said: "We are delighted to be honouring Tarique Ghaffur for his high-profile work, his integrity, sense of justice and professionalism."

'An assistant commissioner for the Metropolitan Police in London, he started his career as a bobby in Greater Manchester, where he still lives'. Who pays his transport costs? Who pays for his accomodation in London?
