BANNED: The evil weed.

IT'S not just smokers fuming at the ban.

This improvised ashtray certainly seems to have taken the brunt of the new law - which bans smoking in enclosed public places.

The litter bin was gradually turned into an overflowing ash tray throughout the day with more than 150 butts stubbed out on it by office workers from the Inland Revenue building in Salford.

The ban, which was introduced on July 1, applies to all work places including company-owned vehicles.

If smoking is banned inside you must supply a outdoor ashtry im afraid? just like rubbish bins are supplied.If you are not allowed to throw ciggy butts away what do they want you to do with them???????????????

But in this loony country of ours, if the council provide any aids to smoking whatsoever, they could technically get sued if a smoker catches a predictable disease. That's how daft it's all become.

Dont have any smoking bins. when you finish your cig stub it out and insert it into a plastic bag like when i walk my dog i pick up his waste.
Problem solved any 1 caught using waste disposal bins for waste(as i might still be lit and cause the bin to set light)fine them.

Yes, and I bet the ash-trays in the Houses of Commons and Lords bars (the ones not open to the public) are still in use. No change there!!

So let me get this right - fined 50 quid if you litter the street with cigarette butts, or 50 quid if you smoke inside.

Boy am I glad I left the country years ago.

Its the same in front of the ATM at Tesco Metro on Quay St in the city centre...all the staff from Direct Line, next door, just drop all their fag ends there. Smokers are disgusting. The badly designed council bins, though, are inadequate for the task.

everybody should save their cig ends up and at the end of the week post them off to 10 downing street for the pm to deal with. let him sort out the mess his party have caused. im a non smoker by the way and going in pubs for me is now enjoyable again. but the fact is the councils all over the uk knew this ban was coming and should of prepared for it by installing special cig bins outside all of the buildings where smoking is banned ie, everywhere. yes it would be expensive but if you are going to move all smoking outdoors you have to provide proper disposal units.

I can see this ban leading to more smoke related illnesses. Instead of keeping the smokers separated in a well ventilated room we now have to brave the toxic fog at the entrance to every building.

Add this to the raft of smokers who will now be going down with pneumonia and we're likely to bring the NHS to its knees.

We have bims outside our office But a lot of smokers either stub fags out on the wall or toss them on the floor. If they dont respect thier own body how can they be expected to care about the environment.

It will take a little gust of wind to have them all over the floor. What a stinking mess!

I agree as well that the number of pneumonia cases will match or outweigh the amount of money spent by the NHS on smoking related illnesses.

I had a heart attack in FEB.2004 and have not smoked since.The money I saved payed for a holiday to Australia. I have watched my grand-daughter grow up.I have seen MAN.UTD.win loads of times.I have seen MAN.CITY have a rubbish season{nowt fresh}I have seen numerous sunrise and sunsets. I have seen some of my friends die {thru smoking mainly} but im still here.Perhaps the pro smoking brigade should take a step back and reflect what is more important....a cigarette or life itself.

If the Inland Revenue staff are to blame - then what's the problem - it's litter, it's not in the bin and they should be fined.
One more thing, though - who counted them?

As a sufferer of a smoking related desease (COPD) i fully agree with you its time people grew up and realised what dangers that smoking causes?The best thing i ever did was to give up smoking but the damage is done for me .i cannot walk more than a few yards without getting out of breath,If only other people realised that smoking isnt clever or the thing do do????life is more important.

I absolutely agree - I gave up smoking and the money I saved took my family for a cruise holiday in egypt. It's not difficult to give up - if you are struggling ask an ex-smoker when they gave up and unless it is a celebrated event every year, most people can't even remember.
