THE historic Robertson's jam factory is one of three earmarked for closure by their new owner - with plans to axe hundreds of jobs in the food industry.
Families across Greater Manchester have been left reeling as Premier Foods said up to 655 jobs would go from the factories - in Droylsden, Wythenshawe and Middlewich.
In Droylsden, the Robertson's jam plant is set to close in October 2008 with the loss of 253 jobs. In Wythenshawe, 109 jobs will go when the factory, making Sharwood cooking sauces, closes in March 2009.
In Middlewich, 193 workers will go, with the factory, which makes Bisto gravy and Saxa salt products, closing by August 2008. An office there is also set to close, with the loss of 100 staff.
Premier Foods say most operations at all three sites will shift to the south, following a `review of its combined manufacturing facilities'.
The firm took over James Robertson and Son's jam works - at Droylsden since 1890 - in March, when they bought parent company RHM for £2bn.
The company, which dropped its `golly' logo in 2001, continues to produce curds, preserves and marmalade for worldwide export.
After being told of the job losses, shift workers in Droylsden, many in tears, spoke of their shock and anger. Many said they felt let down and betrayed by the plans.
One said: "It will affect Droylsden badly. It's the worst possible news and we are gutted. They called us into a meeting to tell us and another shift had to work straight after being told the news. We were treated like children."
Another angry worker said: "It stinks. People were in tears and we all feel badly let down.
"Some people have worked here for between 20 and 30 years. It was their life.
"This factory has been here for more than 100 years and it is a very sad day."
Under the closure plans, the manufacture of Robertson's jam and Golden Shred marmalade will transfer to Histon, in Cambridgeshire. Sharwoods cooking sauces and chutneys produced in Wythenshawe will transfer to Bury St Edmunds, in Suffolk, and Worksop, in Nottinghamshire. Bisto gravy and Saxa salt products currently made at Middlewich will transfer to Worksop and Ashford.
In a statement, Premier Foods said there will now be a consultation at all three plants with employees and unions.
The company said the announcements were `proposals' at this stage.
Premier Foods boss Robert Schofield said: "We understand the impact these proposals will have on the individuals directly affected and will work with them to explore opportunities for redeployment."
The TGWU said it strongly opposed the plans to close the plants and would continue to fight for their survival.

At least with Europe we have a life line, even if it is only a bureaucratic one.

Mr Manchester (03/07/2007 at 12:56)
Ah, there's nothing like the old 'there's more to life..' argument when someone has a better, informed opinion than your own...
Let's hope the unions can bring this to as best a conclusion as possible: at the very least, payment for retraining and suitable redundancy sums for the workforce involved.

We sell technology all over the world mate, ive worked in the industry we sell to most arab states ect we sell very little into the european states. infact europe takes most of our work from britain .its ideals like yours that have spoiled our country .think about (little-europeans) they look after their own people and jobs at our costs. its time britain looked after itself ""FOR ONCE"".I dont see us stealing jobs from the germans or the french?? but i see lots of our jobs going to places like holland (hp sauce ect) and no doubt these jobs from robertsons will be based in europe....weve lost all our jobs at the cost of europe.
but no doubt people like yourself will not admit to being shafted by europe..

Apart from your usual patronising air, you are living in the past.
Firstly, you mention 'the unions' as if they have any say, sway or significance. They haven't thanks to the Blessed Margaret. Thankfully they are gone forever.
Secondly, you talk about money to retrain - ha! I have been made redundant and nobody paid to retrain me. That attitude just about sums up society these days. Everybody wants somebody else to do things for them. This nation's greatness was based on people who got up and did it for themselves not whinging left wingers who want help from all quarters.

Your last statement is bob on.Im in full agreement with you. This great country was made great by people getting things done, but thanks to the looney leftys and the bleeding heart liberals ,the country has gone down the tubes.
Mr Manchester (03/07/2007 at 13:53)
Sorry to hear you had unfortunate circumstances with your redundancy -- being a decent sort you would (no doubt) not want the same treatment repeated to others.
Re: unions. "Thankfully they are gone forever." I'm a member of a thriving NUJ chapel which has, year on year, negotiated with the HR director of the company I am employed by. Very successful results, this year we're aiming for 8% above current wage rates to take into account inflation and other cost factors. So they're certainly not gone er forever -- the TUC is comprised of 59 unions and just under 7 million workers (thought I'd just let you know in case you're the one living with a 1980s defeatist mindset). They're there to be utilised and to support.
Anyway, c'mon, there's more to life...!

However, I still don't know why we need a political union with the EU to sell jam to the French.
ace, manchester (03/07/2007 at 13:59)
Its you with your head full of ideals that are outdated? just like the postmen (going on strike) that didnt do them much good? unions are finished.Company directors have the upper hand now.. money first people last..
moodyblu, Heald Green (03/07/2007 at 14:01)
The very fact that your union is aiming for 8% just about sums up all that is wrong with unions. That's why they are over. In case you have forgotten, your pal Scargill finished you off. I have worked for 40 years, negotiated my own pay and done OK. I don't need a load mouth with a delf esteem defect to represent me.

Mr Manchester (03/07/2007 at 14:33)
"I have worked for 40 years, negotiated my own pay and done OK." You negotiated your way out of a job then? You don't specify what is wrong with workers using the resources of unions -- please elaborate.
"That's why they are over." Please refer to my previous posting on the TUC.
"I don't need a load mouth with a delf esteem defect to represent me." A load mouth? Delf esteem? Something tells me you would have benefitted from some help...!

WOULDNT IT BE JUST? ive tried all this lets stick toghether malarkey most people wont back you in the end britain has lost its get up and go! this is why we are in such a mess.
moodyblu, Heald Green (03/07/2007 at 14:55)
I got another job, lower down the strata and have done ok.
My point is that I can stand up for myself. I don't need a full time official to look after me.
Mr Manchester (03/07/2007 at 16:15)
Did the plc analyse your management skills and decide to bypass the city as a result? Perhaps they declined your services on the grounds of your communication/man management skills? They do seem somewhat David Brent-esque...
Pescado (03/07/2007 at 18:45)
It was right here in this debate a minute ago.
Ken Neck, Droylsden (03/07/2007 at 23:06)
Exactly!
Mr Manchester (04/07/2007 at 12:20)
My point is they may need support as these companies enter their final weeks, to prepare for their future.
