CONTROVERSY over a possible knighthood for football star David Beckham flared up once more on the brink of his return to the England side.
Reports claimed that some Whitehall officials were opposing making him Sir David because of his move to the US, which might make him unavailable for the national team.
Names are being scrutinised in Whitehall for Tony Blair's Resignation Honours List, as well as the Queen's annual Birthday Honours.
An unnamed source said: "Some officials feel that there is nothing wrong with honouring a player who is based in Europe and free to represent his country, but there is a big difference if the player is earning his main income and paying tax in the United States and unable to play for England."
A knighthood for 32-year-old Beckham would make his former Spice Girl wife Lady Beckham - a title she has made clear she would relish.
Should Beckham be knighted? Have your say below.

His charitable work is valuable but, in relation to his own income, it is not that significant. If he continues to work for charity then he should be considered for an honour in perhaps ten years. The thought of Victoria Beckham styling herself "Lady Beckham" is pretty nauseating.

Is he any worse than some of the people who now grace the house of Lords?
And what about buying a title? Nobody seemed to be too worried about that scam until a minority party MP brought it to the attention of parliament.
David Beckham has worked hard.
He has worked tirelessly for those less fortunate than himself & throughout his life he has displayed a quiet dignity.
Has anyone ever & I mean ever, known of him to retaliate against those who have 'slagged' him off.
The present english football coach quickly comes to mind on that one.
Leave him alone. He is a credit to his country.
Good on ya' David.
