RESIDENTS demanding a new community centre have built their own - from cardboard.
The 12-ft high structure was constructed from timber and card by the Friends of Levenshulme to raise awareness of their campaign.
It was unveiled on the site of the previous centre at Gordon Avenue and Chapel Street, in Levenshulme, which was demolished last October.
Children decorated the cardboard community centre with brightly coloured paints, while others gave the derelict site a facelift with flowers and plants to create a community garden.
Spokesman Stuart Calton said: "Last September the council voted to demolish the community centre.
"In that same meeting they resolved to actively explore replacement with a new building. Nearly nine months and one regeneration consultation meeting later, we're still looking at a disused site."
Members of the pressure group have already gathered 2,300 signatures on a petition asking `Who is Looking After Levenshulme?' which they plan to present to Manchester council leader Sir Richard Leese later this month.
