TONY Blair continued his farewell tour of Britain and claimed: `I left Manchester a stronger place than I found it'.
The Prime Minister, who will stand down at the end of next month, was speaking to the M.E.N. during a tour of South Trafford College in Altrincham.
He said Manchester had been `transformed' during his decade at Number 10 but warned his party would have to keep `moving with the times' under likely successor Gordon Brown.
"I like to think Manchester is a very much more prosperous, stronger place than 10 years ago," said Mr Blair. "You come to facilities like this and they are not what they were in 1997. I was in Moss Side recently and there has been big progress there, though there are still big challenges.
"In the city centre there has been a transformation. But there is still a lot of work to do. We have got to keep moving with the times."
Mr Blair flew into Altrincham in a Royal Navy helicoper. He was mobbed by dozens of cheering students at the college, which last January became the first in Britain to get top inspection marks in five out of five categories.
Mr Blair inspected some of the artwork by the teenagers before dropping in on the catering department where he surprised everyone by grabbing a blowtorch to toast a creme brulee.
The Prime Minister, who had already visited schools and colleges in London, Northampton and Worksop during a packed day, then took part in a round-table discussion with students and staff about how facilities had changed. He ended his tour by watching a game of five-a-side in the sports hall.
Mr Blair said it was `very hard' to say what he would miss the most about leading Britain when he leaves his post on June 27.
"Everyone tells me it will be a very strange feeling, but in a funny way I am looking forward to it," he said. "I have always been one to look forward not back." And asked what his biggest regret was over the past decade, he laughed: "That is for me to know and you to find out."
Is the city stronger after Blair's reign? Have your say.

After the bomb, Tony Blair made promises to rebuild Manchester, and he kept them. The city is thriving more so than it was 10 years ago and Mr Blair has to take some credit for that surely!!

Blair will allways be known for his big cheesy smile and involvement in getting the uk into a war that wasnt anything to do with us.
Did the usa help us in the falklands no and the only reason thy came into the second world war was the japs bombed pearl harbour for no reason as the usa wasnt even involved.

The way Blair is crowing you would have think he had single-handedly paid for everything that has happened here over the last decade out of his own pocket!

In any event, Tony Blair wouldn't recognise socialism if it stood up & hit him in the face.
He's the biggest 'Tory' of them all. The consummate
'spin artist'.

Well done Tony, give yourself another pat on the back. The way you have single handedly solved every crisis in the world is beyond reproach. Then again some people may say you're deluded...!

Wouldn't even mind but it's not even a great secret!
Just like your football club (is it still a club, seeing those words have been removed from the club badge?). Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I know the US secretly provided the RN with AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles & also a bit of sneaky intelligence but what else did they do in all honestly in the Falklands?
If I remember rightly it was the 'Red & Green fighting machine' that did the bulk of the winning down there - and of course the RN.

2.. The article in question alluded to socialism throughout.
You know, a labour? Prime minister, preaching to a 'dyed in the wool' labour populace.
And I do believe that Manchester would have benefitted in the past from a softer left wing council with no politically correct rubbish stifling public opinion.
As for dystopia. Been perusing the 'Oxford' have we? Good boy.

As for the The pollsters. It is only a few months ago that Labour was trailing the Liberal party by a massive margin according your quoted pollster.
You really should get around a bit more mr Manchester. You never know. Your narrow views on Australia may change somewhat.( parochial?)
I do concede however that Mancunians can & do form their own opinions & express them without guidance from outside bodies. That is if they don't fall foul of the omnipresent 'politically correct' brigade which appears to be rife in my homeland at the present time.
The only concession that I make to being 'parochial' is that I was born within a parish within the Manchester boundary. So there!
