Robbo urges kids to tackle more sport

AS rugby legend Jason Robinson prepares to hang up his boots, he is urging youngsters to put theirs on and get some exercise.

World Cup winner Robinson, who is about to call time on an illustrious career in both rugby union and rugby league, says children should be encouraged to try as many sports as possible in order to keep fit.

The former Sale Sharks and Wigan Warrriors star, who has just retired from club rugby, played a range of sports as a boy before opting to play rugby league.

He said: "I think it's vital that children get as much exercise as possible and there is no better way than taking part in sports.

"You hear so much about child obesity and the associated problems these days tthat I think it's important to encourage youngsters to get active from an early age.

"I remember when I was young I was always playing something, whether it was football, tennis, cricket or rugby.

"And it's not just about getting fit. It's also about having lots of fun.

"Rugby has been very rewarding for me, not just in terms of the things I have won, but also the people I have met, the frieds I have made and the enormous amount of pleasure it has given me."

Robinson, who if selected will play for England in the World Cup in September before retiring completely from the game, was taking charge of a training session for primary school children from Woodfold Primary School in Wigan and St Clare's special school in Derbyshire.

The two schools were selected at random from the 42,000 schools signed up to Tesco Sport for Schools and Clubs.

The 'masterclass' involved a warm-up followed by general rugby skills which the children then put into practise for a friendly game.
