Sinclairs Oyster Bar, in Shambles Square, called the police after the group gathered yesterday afternoon.
The crowd subsequently dispersed and other nearby pubs and restaurants - including those in The Printworks - also chose to shut their doors temporarily.
Officers patrolled the entrances to the Printworks but most venues had reopened by 6.30pm.
An eye-witness said: "They were in the Shambles area from about 3pm and they were singing very loudly. It looked as though they had been drinking for a while."
It is thought the group had been in the city centre celebrating St George's Day.
A police spokesman confirmed that no-one had been injured and there had not been any arrests.
He said: "The pub decided to shut as a precautionary measure and requested our assistance to ensure that there was no trouble."
"They were chanting abusive songs and I am sure they were intent on causing trouble.
"There was a lot of them gathered together and shoppers were passing very quickly."
