FOR Greater Manchester's residents, the solution is simple: tackle global warming now. More than 90 per cent of us believe the climate is changing and 80 per cent are worried about the threat it poses to their children.
And one of the solutions? Bring in the congestion charge.
Almost two-thirds of the region backs Manchester's proposed scheme as a way of cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The results of the M.E.N.'s survey - which was devised in conjunction with the Manchester Is My Planet Campaign (MIMPC) - will now help policy-makers decide how to encourage people to increase recycling and reduce environmental damage.
Keith Boxer, managing director of MIMPC, which advises the government on the north west's environmental policy, said he was delighted that 3,390 people filled in the online survey.
"The survey has revealed a high level of awareness of climate change across Greater Manchester and, most importantly, an accompanying desire to take action," he said.
"We were astonished that 95 per cent of respondents believe the world's climate is changing, and 92 per cent stated that in order to tackle climate change we need to take action immediately.
'Difference'
"The survey has highlighted that 88 per cent of people strongly believe that we, as individuals, can make a difference.
"It is very important we continue to raise awareness of global warming and help households and businesses to take action to save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions."
Around half - or 46.9 per cent - of Manchester's residents believe there is currently sufficient "help, support and information" to ensure that people achieve energy efficiency.
But 80 per cent of respondents expressed an interest in using solar panels while 90 per cent did not rule out switching to "green electricity" supplied by renewable sources - provided both were cost effective.
Mr Boxer was also surprised that around 70 per cent of respondents said they would be prepared to "change their lifestyle" if the government introduced personal carbon rations.
"The survey has proved hugely useful in gaining a snapshot of Manchester's position regarding climate change," he said.
"We can now take these findings and work with them in order to help shape future policy."
WHAT do you make of the survey's findings? Have your say.

Remember - the average IQ in the UK is a pitiful 100 & it is easy to fool SOME of the people ALL the time!

Just wait until the time gets closer - there will be a lot more than 70% in opposition. However I'll also bet that the good citizens of Manchester won't be given the choice; our "elected representatives" will be doing it for us. It's for our own good, you know. The whole thing is just bent!

Did tha granddad spend all 'is money on booze and fags like mine did so he had to walk?
If I only used 3 low engry bulbs I would triple my electric light bill, I am just off for a walk upto Ashton where I will buy modest amounts of fresh food which in most case does not need cooking. I have not been on a plane since 1975. What I doing to save the planet is being undone by China building 5 coal fired power stations a week. Attach blame to those who deserve it.

What are you talking about i drive a car (a very small car 800cc engine) we purchased all brand new kichen appliances that are eco friendly "ALL" our light bulbs are "all" eco friendly and "all" our TVs ect are all energy efficiant, So why do you think that people like myself are stupid? I bet if i went through your home i would find appliances Ect that use more resources than anything i have in my home.YOU CAN BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU USE TO HELP THE ENVIROMENT without being conned into this sort of charge. So dont start telling people that this charge will help "your grandkids" IT WONT .Its just a way of the government making yet more money.

The question was asking the effect congestion charging will have on the environment, not on our pockets. If you are happy with the polluted air you breath then so be it, but why should everyone else suffer for a few people who are not interested in looking after our environment - be it here in Greater Manchester or the rest of the world.

Financial penalties are just a form of tax nothing is ever done for the environment with the cash raised

Please qualify this statement of yours
Bring in the congestion charge.
Almost two-thirds of the region backs Manchester's proposed scheme as a way of cutting greenhouse gas emissions
Two thirds makes it sound like we support the Congestion Charge.
You plainly asked this loaded question, or one very similar
Do you think if the Congestion Charge was implemented in Greater Manchester, would reduce local pollution?
Of course it will, only and idiot would say no.
That does not mean to be taken as we support it
WE DO NOT
Go back and ask this single exact question totally unaltered without any others
Do you want the Congestion charge implemented in Greater Manchester, by any method, including a satellite tracking device in your car, or by ANPR cameras

Then the survey page link disappeared off the home page and the only way that you could get to it was if you were mailed a link from one of your environmentalist friends.
This was one of the most weighted surveys that I have seen.
Shame on you MEN for promoting such propaganda. According to more scientific surveys 37percent believe in Man Made Climate Change 42percent believe, as I do, that it is a con and the rest (21percent) are undecided.
But if you seriously believe that there is so much support for congestion charging, then you will have no problem in having a referendum, would you?

Why is it such a group if ignorant unqualified morons are commenting on findings
(which they haven't even read) made by peer reviewed studies, the conclusions for which
have already been watered down by pro-oil megalomaniac governments?
Since every documentary has been dumbed down to the level that pleb public can understand, eveeryone
thinks they're experts.
JUST SHUT UP.
