Police match reward to catch vandals

HERO: DC Stephen Oake
THE Police Authority has doubled the £5,000 reward put up by the Manchester Evening News to catch the vandals who smashed a memorial to police hero Stephen Oake.

A total of £10,000 is now on offer to anyone who gives information which leads to the capture and conviction of the thugs who destroyed the granite monument outside the flat where the Special Branch officer was stabbed to death by terrorist Kamel Bourgass.

The yobs then hurled pieces of the wreckage at police cars in the car park of Cheetham Hill police station, more than half a mile away. The attack happened late on Tuesday night.

Detectives are studying CCTV footage from around the area of the monument and police station to try to identify the culprits.

They are also awaiting analysis of forensic evidence gathered from the scene of both attacks.

Greater Manchester Police Authority chairman Derek Osbaldestin said: "I'm very grateful to the M.E.N. for coming forward with this reward.

"There are very strong feelings within the authority and that's why we've decided to add £5,000 to the reward to make it £10,000.

"People are disgusted by what has been done. When officers put their lives on the line for us on a regular basis, we are very pleased to put our name alongside that of the M.E.N. in this campaign."

DC Oake, 40, was killed in January 2003 by Bourgass. He was attempting to protect his colleagues when the Algerian illegal immigrant stabbed him eight times.

The memorial was originally paid for by Michael Winner's Police Memorial Trust.

The trust has also provided monuments for a number of GMP's other fallen officers. These include one to 49-year-old Raymond Codling at Birch services on the M62 in Heywood. He was shot dead in 1989 by a suspect he was questioning.

There is also one at the junction of Queens Road and Oldham Road in Collyhurst to 35-year-old Pc Raj Ahmed who was killed in 1999 when a stolen car rammed his motorbike and one in Robert Street in Oldham to Pc Alison Armitage, 29, killed trying to stop a stolen car in 2001.

I knew of the other memorial on Oldham Road but I don't think it's wise to report where it is here. How long will it take now for some idiot to read the report and damage that one as well ?

I hope that the polce find quickly the mindless scum who did this to the memory of DC Oak - They dont have a conscience in this regard - they have seared and destroyed the conscience - If they knew that DC Oak wa protecting them from harm - any ounce of notion would they have done this - maybe, maybe not, but the fact remains DC Oak died a hero something that thise mindless thugs will not ever be able to fit into the same shoes of
Mrs Oak must be destrought - Our thougts and prayer to her

There is also the danger that it may not be yobs who are playing games with the police, what if it is actual supporters of terrorism.
