C-charge 'will drive shoppers away'

A THIRD of shoppers would drive to a different town centre to shop if a £5 congestion charge was introduced in their area, research has found.

More than a quarter would use transport other than their car if a charge was brought in and 21 per cent would make fewer journeys, figures from the RAC Foundation and the British Retail Consortium have shown.

The survey also found:

Seventy per cent of shoppers arrive by car.

People without a car frequently get lifts from friends or take a taxi.

Fifty-four per cent have experienced congested roads when out shopping.

On average, many of us make a trip to the shops every other day.

Buses account for six per cent of all trips but nearly 30 per cent of bus trips are for shopping.

The RAC's Edmund King revealed the figures at the Association of Town Centre Management annual conference.

He said: "Good transport links are vital if town centres are to remain prosperous.

"Major changes such as congestion charging can ruin retail if not well planned.

"Motorists will vote with their wheels if too many restrictions are brought in."

What do you think of congestion charging? Have your say.

We're luck that shoppers in Manchester are unlikely to be charegd £5 to go shopping there then aren't we since they tend not to be driving into Manchester during the rush hour?

The government are not bothered, as long as your are paying twice as much for your car, they will simply take the choice of shutting retailer down

None of you have seen what is happening? all your grocery/goods that you will need will be at the ends of motorways? all smaller shops will be closed down so we wont have any option but to use these roads to get our shopping each week? (big brother is comming even closer and faster) You will have to pay to go shopping or use your computer to buy what you need .either way the government have control of your lives..Get out of europe and become what we have always been? a small self suficiant island,Feed ourselves and trade to the rest of the world.or we have to join the rest of europe being controlled by a couple of countrys within europe (do as we are told)And we won the war??I think.

The road tolls planned for Greater Manchester are a very bad idea and there is no escaping this - the local economy will be devastated leaving us at a distinct commercial disadvantage compared to other cities. And don't make me laugh with the "the road tolls won't apply outside of rush hour" line - are GMPTE willing to GUARANTEE this will be the case for ever? Methinks not! As soon as a significant amount of traffic shifts to off-peak travel (outside rush hour) then that will be taxed too. Use your vote in May people!

There is only one business that the authorities are concerned about. That is their own revenue business - taking money that they order you to pay, for nothing in return.

No matter how hard I tried and no matter how many clever spin-doctors that I used, could I ever convince the majority of the British public to allow paedophiles to work in schools? - NO! Then why on earth do MCC or the government think that they will ever get support for congestion charging?
