With three lots of cameras, the Arndale, CCTV and also NCP, how was this women not spotted until it was too late.

Someone must of seen her and been worried about the way she was acting and they jump straight away, they have to climb up!

I am sorry for the family involved but times like these someone, somewhere have to say, this was our building, our security, we will take some of the blame!

Was in Manchester at about 2:30pm today, the roads were chocka.
A terrible thing to happen, I feel for her family, its a wonder that with all the CCTV around the NCP car parks that this woman wasn't spotted until too late.

Thats not really a fair comment if you weren't there, yes people might have seen a woman acting strangely, but unfortunatly alot of people act strangely these days, not all of them jump off a car park!

The_umpire - How can you hold anybody else to blame? This lady was obviously so low to be driven to this that no one would probably have had the chance to stop her. If they had on this car park she would've found somewhere else to go. If somebody drives onto the car park as any other customer would what would make them noticeable? This is a sad situation and my heart goes out to the family left behind but blame cannot be portioned onto a company such as NCP or the Arndale.

while i don't agree with everything umpire is saying i do agree that this could have been prevented using cctv. according to the shopkeeper this is the sixth jump from this building in two years. why aren't there some kind of safeguards in place? my condolences to the family and friends.

The Umpire - I'm sorry but your comment appalled me. What a terrible thing to say. Those security cameras are meant to look for criminal activity not for people who take a decision to jump, an act which could have taken seconds. The people who watch them are security guards not trained psychologists. The people to blame are the person who jumped and whoever made her life so miserable she felt this was the only option. It is a tragic story but don't pin the blame on those who watch the CCTV, that's just unfair. They probably wouldn't have been able to get to ther in time anyway. I think you owe those poor people an apology quite frankly, it would have been an awful thing to have witnesses without you telling them the death of a human being shouldbe on their conscience.

That shopkeeper said "The roof of the car park is so easily accessible"... errr, well of course it is. How else do you expect people to park their cars up there and get in/out???

I'm sorry, but if someone really wants to jump then they'll find a way to jump; you can't really stop them.

The barriers are high enough to stop anyone accidentally falling over the edge, which is good enough for me.

to the person who posted before me: my step-brother was on top of that car park when this happened and apparently there was somebody else with her just before she fell...

The facts are that this is the first fatality which this Car park has had in about 6 years, the roof of the car parks are covered in signs giving people the Samaritans telephone number, This will not stop anyone who is so desparate and low that they want to end there life. Its to easy to blame other in this day and age, people do have a certain responsibility for there own actions, we cant blame the people "whos building it is"
no-one is going to think that a women coming into the carpark in a car is going to do what she did, she drove up to the roof and jumped, no one would of had time to do anything to help this women
Thought should be with the Lady's family and a thought should be spared for the people who had to witness this tragic act as its not a nice thing to see. there the ones who have to live with the images.

I saw this just after it had happened, it wasn't a nice thing to see. And one lady who had seen this was in a state. I dont think anybody should be blamed for this, and those who think otherwise obviously dont understand.

i literally walked out of the arndale about 30seconds after it happend, i was about 10metres away from it when i came out. this could not have been prevented and id really like to know some of the methods that the people below have in mind to prevent it from happening. because you know it cant be so you should stop talking rubbish, what do you propose suicide watchers? for the 7times a year it happens? what a nice waste of money that will be.

i seen a lot of of what happend apart from the jump, i saw her lying on the pavement and the women who had seen it all directly in the middle of the road was an absolute wreck. i can say its something that will stick with me for the rest of my life, the women crying and the images of the body have been stuck in my head for the past 2 days now. the fact that i saw a few people laughing about it as it all unfolded i was actually sickened, i was there before any ambulance, police, there were a few arndale security and everybody did everything they could to help her but it was too late.

the thing that has got me the most is that there was no dignity in it all, she had a blanket to cover her when the paramedics realized she was dead.

somebody has died decided to take there own life and people "naturally" are being selfish self obsessed about how "they have been affected by it" so lets point the finger. i know i have talked about my own account of it and how i have been affected, but the difference is i am not pointing the finger as i dont think it could have been prevented and nobody will ever be able to do so.

the thoughts should be with her family and everyone should get over themselves and have a bit of respect, granted its not the most considerate thing to do to take your own life by jumping off a roof on a busy day in Manchester. but so what, there are people that need to get a life and stop looking to point the finger at someone for what has happend. just be thankful its not a member of your family or friends.

these people need to be spotted to before they go to do this kind of thing by friends or family members, not as there on the edge of a building. that is just lame effort at pointing fingers "they should have seen the cctv" and then the security do what? coax them down with there negotiation skills there trained with. id really like whoever wrote that to elaborate on there master plan for that one.

We look out onto the Arndale car park from our apt and every day and night for the past two years I have to watch people break into cars, throw stones over to my apt and people down below, watch kids hang over the balcony of the car park etc to spit on people. We have to shout over to the kids when they attempt to break into people's cars but this simply seems to encourage them.

There should be a 6ft grid fence added to the top level to stop anyone from climbing over and it should be patrolled regularly. It must be done maybe 4 times a day at the moment, which is not enough. My husband and I seem to do the job of the Arndale security more than the Arndale do. My husband glimpsed the lady seconds after she fell and if he had seen her climb over he would have certainly shouted over to her to try and distract her. He doesn't remember seeing anyone else with her though.

Incidentally, I have never seen a sticker for the Samaritans up there???

I agree that it should only be accessed by people who have parked their car up there to avoid potential suicides and accidents, maybe a swipe card system to access the stairs would assist? One of these days someone will fall from the rooftop by accident as it is a regular weekend game now for kids for climb over the fence (this should certainly be higher) and to shout at the people down below.

Be thankful your life is not driving you to this sort of desperate act. Dont look for blame it wont bring this lovely lady back. People that end thier lives are mentally ill and deserve respect rather then moaning about the people that were effected by the sight. Never in a million years do these desperate people have time or the capacity to think about the effect of thier actions.

What is wrong with my comments, yes, the people who watch the CCTV are just people but now they have to be trained with licences to do their job.

I am not asking for them to be trained in people or brains but for them to be checked at least once an hour instead of cameras watching people handing out leaflets in the town centre, then something might have been spotted sooner.

yes, the car park is an open area but people have been trying to jump from this one and most multi-stories in Manchester for years so by putting up some extra security of the roof of these car parks might help stop it from actually happening in the first place.

So 'The Umpire' thinks that the car park's CCTV cameras should be checked 'once an hour' to prevent suicides? Right... so what happens in the other fifty-nine minutes per hour when someone might choose to kill themselves? How ridiculous.

If someone wants to die, then there are a multitude of ways for them to kill themselves. Shall we all have CCTV in our bathrooms so nobody can slash their wrists with a razor blade? Or how about in our garages, so nobody can use the car exhaust method? If someone truly wants to die, then they will find a way. It takes a split second for someone to jump from a car park - even if someone had been watching the CCTV, the chances are nobody could have got there in time to save this poor woman's life.

Not everything has to be somebody's fault. Sometimes, people do choose to kill themselves, and sometimes, there's nothing we can do to stop them. It's very sad and I feel incredibly sorry for this woman and her family, but not all tragedies are preventable. Why can't people accept this instead of looking for someone to blame?

This woman was on her own when she did it.She had been very ill for a long time. She left behind 3 young children. She will be very sadly missed
