Conservatives in Manchester 2011: No NHS 'sell off' by us, pledges health secretary Andrew Lansley

Andrew Lansley speaking at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester

The NHS will never be sold off or broken up under the Conservatives, the health secretary has promised.

Andrew Lansley stressed his commitment to the health system, as well as that of the Prime Minister, blaming Labour and the unions for 'misinterpretation, misinformation and misrepresentation' about his plans.

Addressing delegates at the Tory party conference in Manchester, he said: "You all know my commitment to the National Health Service. "While I am secretary of state, the NHS will never be fragmented, privatised or undermined. "I am personally committed to an NHS which gives equal access and excellent care.

"I am passionate about improving the quality of care throughout the NHS."

He said the Left has used the NHS as a 'political football', adding: "You simply can't trust Labour on the NHS."

Listing a number of new and established policies, Mr Lansley said he is proud of the service. A new NHS 111 helpline will be up and running – and available to all – within 18 months, he said.

He said the current controversial Health Bill going through parliament will safeguard the health service's traditional aims, adding: "We are committed to the values of the NHS. To a comprehensive, high quality service for all, free at the point of use and based on need, not the ability to pay."

This will turn out to be a lie.

a 111 number, I can see mistakes being made and people calling 112 by mistake (The alternative emergency number to 999). I can't see the operators being very thankful for that. 112 was introduced a few years ago to avoid confusion for people from the European Union who dial 112 at home.

Hmmm... Nursing numbers slashed, waiting lists going up, the postcode lottery getting worse and a removal of the legal duty for the health secretary to provide a comprehensive health system free at the point of use.

It's lies, plain and simple.

So, who do I vote for if I want the NHS to be broken up?
