Tony Blair has launched an astonishing attack on Gordon Brown’s decision to scrap plans for a super-casino in Manchester – branding it ‘the worst form of puritanism’.
The former PM said his successor’s decision to ditch the project, which would have created 3,500 jobs in the deprived east of the city, was a ‘partisan’ and ‘ineffectual’ gesture under pressure from the church and right-wing press. Mr Blair’s attack – in his controversial new autobiography, A Journey – threatens to reopen wounds in the Labour party over the issue.
Tony Lloyd, MP for Manchester Central, said the axing of the casino was ‘grossly unfair and outrageous’ while Graham Stringer, MP for Manchester Blackley, said Mr Brown had acted out of ‘weakness and cowardice’.
Manchester was chosen to host the country’s first super-casino – under Mr Blair’s premiership in 2007.
An independent panel selected the site next to the City of Manchester Stadium from a shortlist of eight, including bookies’ favourite Blackpool.
MPs approved the plan but it was rejected in the House of Lords, creating a parliamentary stand-off.
The following year – under Mr Brown’s leadership – the government ditched the plans.
Mr Blair said: "It was the worst form of puritanism – partisan as well as ineffectual. So people can gamble to their hearts’ content and their wallets’ limit – but not in a brand-new town complex with a casino, entertainment centre, sports facilities and shops."
Mr Lloyd, whose constituency includes Eastlands, said last night: "I agree with Tony Blair that those who kicked it into touch deprived a community with one of the highest levels of unemployment the opportunity to access well paid jobs and proper training. It was the wrong decision for Manchester and the country."
Mr Stringer said: "Gordon’s decision was a combination of weakness and cowardice that lost east Manchester 3,500 jobs.
"He bowed to the House of Lords and wouldn’t take them on."
Mr Blair also discloses in the book how he sought advice about Mr Brown from Sir Alex Ferguson.
He tells how he asked the United manager: "What would you do if you had a really difficult but brilliant player causing you problems?" Mr Blair said Sir Alex replied: "Get rid of them."
The book describes James Purnell – the former Stalybridge and Hyde MP who quit the cabinet in frustration at Mr Brown’s flagging leadership – as ‘incredibly bright’ and ‘invaluable on policy issues’.
Salford and Eccles MP Hazel Blears, another loyal Blairite, is lauded as ‘a great campaigner’.

At taht time we were importing Polish builders.
How many full time permannent jobs would there have been?
Besides we have a bookies on evey street corner and enough casinos in town as it is. The only winner in gambling is the casino from which the government takes tax from the winnings.
The average demographic of this supercasino would mainly be working class poor i.e. those not able to susain losses really but who play in hope of scraping some money together. Labour would have taken money of these people in the form of gambling tax. It isn't right.

As for the casino, well it may well have created jobs for the City and it certainly would have been a coup for the City, but I would suggest that the intended investement and redevelopment from the owners of Manchester City will bring as many,if not more jobs to the area once it has been completed, without the "social stigma" and arguments about the rights and wrongs of a casino

Secondly, hoy many of these would be new jobs and not filled by importing staff displaced by the closure of similar smaller facilities elsewhere?
Thirdly, how many of these jobs would be real, full time, jobs paying a living wage and not just dozens of part time, minimum wage, jobs offered on short term contracts to work unsociable hours?
Fourthly, however one dresses it up, gambling is a human weakness, hoping against hope for that one lucky day when one comes up trumps and walks off with a fortune. Most of us realise that the odds are well stacked against us but for various reasons some people stake ans loose more than they can ever afford. Is a temple to human weakness really the right way to regenerate a run down area desparately in need of real honest employment?

This country must be in a far worse state than I ever imagined. Ask a bully how things should be done. Thank god Hitler is dead (allegedly).
Dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Where have all the good people gone?
Revolution ASAP please!
How much richer are the rich today then?
Now they've bought all the gold back (funny how they had money to do that) and they continue to store the wealth they have taken from us, in order to make another future killing (2012 must really worry them).
Money = paper and cheap scrap metal. How much could you get for it? Ans. = 0.
The word renege comes to mind at this point.
So wake up and ask yourself where the real wealth is? (Somebody owns a forest on the face of a world that belongs to all of us? How did that happen then?) Remember your family; your life is expendable to them, so long as they can stay rich. As long as they have us to fight for their oil, wealth and power and for nothing, they just take the urine.
See you in heaven with a couple of others.
P.S. If they don’t like the cut of your jib you’re out, however much talent you have. The word as spoken by SAF. This is how users think.
Learn to play nice and make them richer or you’re out. Yer right!

What a load of typically BITTER tripe from you. The story is about the casino but you still manage to turn it into a Fergie bashing rant you're so OBSESSED. If he is such a vile and horrible bully of a man why did gentleman of football Sir Bobby Robson count him as a dear friend, why do so many say he has been a second father to them, why is he adored by millions? Could it be that he is actually a good person but because he has embarrassed your club over decades you despise him. Hmmm, thought so. Saddo.

Am I allowed to say 'Typical'? Maybe I need permission.
I believe there are those that just love the Glazers and what they do and stand for.
Only united fans have the right to an opinion, a comment and ONLY THEY know the truth, (again just so typical).
As I asked in my last post, where have all the good people gone? Those that haven't been brainwashed into thinking just because they like something it must be true, right and have to be accepted throughout Christendom by everyone because they say so.
The trilogy is complete.
TYPICAL!
