Stars back Tameside GP’s bid to halt health reforms

Support: Politicians and celebrities are backing Dr Kailash Chand’s epetition against NHS reforms

Politicians and celebrities are backing an Ashton doctor’s petition to drop the NHS reforms.

GP Dr Kailash Chand, who was awarded an OBE last year for services to healthcare, started the epetition calling for a stop to the proposed shake-up.

Now he has won the backing of ex-deputy prime minister John Prescott, who has posted several appeals for people to sign the petition on Twitter.

Shadow health secretary and MP for Leigh Andy Burnham has also pledged his support. He told the M.E.N: "I have got huge respect for Kailash and what he has achieved."

Even TV chef Jamie Oliver has sent a message to more than 1,600,000 Twitter followers asking them to sign up.

Dr Chand hopes his petition will get the 100,000 signatures needed to force a debate in the Commons, which could delay the Bill past its end of March deadline.

Dr Chand is a minority, as most Doctors can't wait for the reforms. The Doctors that have treated me over the last couple of years have been frustrated and hindered by bureaucracy and panels of non medical people making decisions for them. The money saved by this change will allow a lot more people to be treated than before.

I think the " Wythenshawe Tory" is not in touch with the people. I am still to meet a single doctor in favour of the reforms and in fact the BMA has now endorsed the " drop the bill" petition. I am in the hospital sector as a cardiologist and am extrememly proud of our NHS, where i can treat all, from all backgrounds on the basis of clinical need not their ability to pay. Most clinicians are frustrated by meaningless beurocracy, but these reforms are a smokescreen to eventual privatisation. If this bill gets introduced a doctor will be more influenced by finances than actually treating patients according to clinical need. We all want to improve our health care but these reforms will take us backwards not forwards. For those wanting to understand more of the real implications of these reforms read this publication in the BMJ by Dr Chand and why you should sign the petition

I think the " Wythenshawe Tory" is out of touch with reality. The majority of Doctors do not support the reforms and are actually emphatically against them. The British Medical Association has just endorsed Dr Chand's petition. I work in the hospital sector as a Cardiologist and am very proud of our NHS where i can treat all patients based on their clinical need, not ability to pay. These reforms are a smoke screen for the eventual privatisation of the NHS and an americanised system of health care. Do you really want a doctor to order a test for you depending on how much it costs rather than what's best? The overwhelming majority of people will be worse off under this bill. We can still stop this from going ahead so i urge all of you to sign it. It will take less than a minute of your time. If you want to know more about what these reforms mean and how they will affect you, your family and your children read this publication written by Dr Chand in the BMJ on why you should sign it.

Dr Chand is not in minority " Wythenshawe Tory". He is defending the basic human right of free access to health care. I work in the hospital sector as a cardiologist and the majority of doctors are emphatically against the reforms. I am extrememely proud be part of a system where patients are treated on clinical need, not on ability to pay. These reforms are a smoke screen to eventual privatisation of our health service and the development of an americanised system. Do you really wanted to be treated by a doctor who is going to order a test for you based on its cost ( to save money) raher than what's best? I know what i would want. We can still halt the adoption of the heatlth and social care bill by signing up to the petition. It will take less than 60 seconds of your time. If you want to know more about how the reforms will affect you, your family and your children then read this publication in the British Medical Journal by Dr Chand on why signing this petition is so important!

I don't normally get involved in the daily rants of politicians, but it is interesting to see that Wythenshawe Tory, (that would be a first!), thinks money will be saved by this current reorganisation of the NHS.

At the last count the reconfiguration process projected cost is approx £3bn. This is money that is drawn away from the frontline provision of care. Right now every single penny should be focused on maintaining standards of care. This is a reorganisation that has no democratic mandate and was specifically ruled out by the Tory led Coalition Agreement.

The Tory led Government is exposing the NHS to considerable risk by initiating this major re-organisation at a time of unprecedented financial challenge and when the NHS has a £20bn cuts target to achieve by 2015.

This is a hugely important topic as the NHS will otherwise change for all future generations. Please do vote and support Dr Chand who is working hard at trying to raise awareness and engage the public.

Dr Chand is not a minority, he is an active representative of all those concerned about the catastrophic consequences of the Lansley reform. Lets look at the row data 13,552 signatures for the e-petition in 10 days is not a minority is it? A Comress poll back in June showed that "Asked if the Government should scrap the current proposals for NHS reform and start from scratch, half of the British public (49%) agreed. 32% were unsure and just one in five (19%) disagreed" not a minority is it? same poll showed that shows that more than half of voters do not trust Cameron and call for NHS reform plans to be scrapped. Not even the Torries are unanimous. The survey of grass-roots Tory members by the ConservativeHome website shows that 72 per cent support Mr Lansley's proposals to introduce private-sector providers into the health service and hand control of the vast majority of the English NHS's budget to consortia led by GPs. Now what does this tell us? How can one trust a reform that has no reasonable grounds of saving and most importantly compromising patient care. Also, Wythenshawe Tory, you say that doctors who have treated you –vaguely a representative sample- were frustrated and hindered by bureaucracy, What about the amount of paperwork that the New Reform will involve. I run a department now, I have done the job before but I don’t have time to be ‘hands on’ because I am busy managing. Now how on earth will doctors find the time to provide high quality care when they will have to do somebody else’s job at the same time? Dr Chand put it in a recent BMAarticle ‘The flaw in this argument is that GPs are not experienced in commissioning, many do not want to do it, and also it will take those very experienced GPs who do take the role, away from providing patient care.’
