A BABY whose life was saved by an email remains free of cancer months later.

Madeline Robb, from Stretford, diagnosed eye cancer in Rowan Santos after seeing a photograph of the tot emailed by a friend in Florida.

After Madeline phoned her friend, Rowan's mum Megan, a doctor 4,300 miles away in Tampa confirmed the diagnosis of a large tumour in her left eye.

Now she has undergone surgery to remove the eye and doctors say Rowan is free from cancer.

Business analyst Mrs Robb, whose daughter Lileth was born the same day as Rowan, first contacted Mrs Santos through a pregnancy website.

The two women have never met but 32-year-old Mrs Robb - who has no medical training - spotted an unusual white shadow on Rowan's eye on a photograph and went on the web to find out more.

She found it could be a symptom of a form of eye cancer called retinoblastoma and sent an email to alert her friend.

Rowan's story has attracted well-wishers to her own website, Facebook group and fundraisering events to help the family meet medical costs.

Mrs Santos, 32, said: "She is doing really well. The surgery was an incredible success. If Maddie hadn't said something when she did this would probably be written another way but Rowan is officially cancer free."

Mrs Robb said: "Rowan and her family have been through a great deal in such a short time and yet her joyful spirit continues to shine through the pictures and stories.

"Having a daughter who shares a birthday with Rowan, I cannot put into words how deeply her experience has affected our family and has caused us to appreciate every moment.

"You just never know what a day can bring."
