New major trauma network will save 20 lives per year

The lives of 20 seriously injured patients who are rushed to hospital will be saved every year because of a new shake-up, health bosses have claimed.

A new "major trauma network" - for patients who have suffered major injuries including serious head and spinal damage, severe burns or stab and gunshot wounds - is being set up across six centres in Greater Manchester.

The accident and emergency unit is to stay open at Fairfield General in Bury – after bosses revealed plans for a multi-million pound expansion.

Fresh fears over the future of the department were raised after maternity was axed at the site in February. But chiefs at Pennine Acute Trust have agreed to spend £2.25m to improve facilities – and say that will secure its long-term future.

Hospital chiefs have created a new children’s A&E department as part of a £3m revamp.

Bosses at Tameside Hospital say their new paediatric emergency unit will mean young patients will be examined in a more family-friendly environment. It has a separate entrance and baby-changing cubicles and disabled facilities.

Giving birth at home may be the safest and cheapest option for women who already have children, a study claimed.

University of Oxford researchers looked at the circumstances of 64,000 births in England between 2008 and 2010. They found that women at low risk of complications could give birth either at home or a midwifery unit to save the NHS money and was healthy for both the mother and child.

Patients with serious broken bones and fractures will go to Manchester Royal Infirmary, life-threatening head injuries will be treated at Salford Royal and major burn cases will go to Wythenshawe hospital.
