Corrie star tackles truancy

CORRIE star Helen Flanagan can tell kids about the importance of attending classes - because she is still a pupil herself.

The teenager, who plays Rosie Webster, met children at a school in Fallowfield for the launch of an anti-truancy campaign.

Helen, 16, studying for A-levels at Westholme School, Blackburn, kickstarted the 100 Days Challenge - aimed at lifting Manchester schools off the bottom of attendance league tables.

Other celebrities are set to get involved in the campaign which will offer concerts and prizes for good attendance.

Important

Helen, who met pupils at Wilbraham Primary School, said: "I thought it was important to stay on because it will give me something to fall back on.

"I have been lucky because my school has been flexible and understanding.

"I always made sure I caught up and I have never wanted to miss out on being at school."

Coun Jeff Smith said: "This is just part of our strategy for raising the profile of attendance. We are putting extra resources into our promotion services who will be listening more to what schools want."

Wright Robinson secondary school in Manchester got a visit from the XFM radio tour bus.

It has offered a scheme rewarding pupils who regularly attend classes with prizes such as concert tickets and MP3 players.
