THE government is facing calls to drop top-up fees following a fall in the number of full-time students accepted at universities.
A total of 389,505 applicants were accepted this year, compared with 404,668 in 2005 and 375,530 in 2004. This represents a fall of 3.7 per cent between 2005 and 2006 but a rise of 3.7 per cent between 2004 and 2006.
The decline coincides with the introduction of top-up fees of up to é3,000 in most English universities. Liberal Democrat education spokeswoman Sarah Teather said: " Top-up fees deter people from going to university."
WOULD you be deterred from going to Uni under the current system? Have your say.

I think fees should be scrapped full stop for degrees the country needs like mathematics and sciences but the fees for the "soft" degrees should stay.
Mrs D, great point of view! I couldnt agree more, what use do Sociology graduates have (apart from ensuring they offer you large fries with your burger). However, for example, take Medicine. The country needs doctors/surgeons. It is a difficult, demanding course that requires high calibre individuals with a good deal of confidence. You may not want to hear it but its true, the standard of student required cant be supplied by your average comp. A majority will come from either private or Public school education backgrounds; their families can afford the fees. I think all fees should be means tested; however, help and subsidised fees should be there for meaningful and useful degrees. Just a thought.
