A MANCHESTER businessman whose life fell apart after he was attacked by a gang of thugs is celebrating with top grades in his A-levels and a place at university.
Stewart Holland, 38, from Didsbury, south Manchester, ran a successful courier company but was left depressed and alone after weeks of hospital treatment to repair a shattered skull and burst ear drum.
To help him rebuild his life, Mr Holland took access courses at a college in Rochdale and left with two A grades and new-found love.
"I'm pleased as punch, really pleased," he said after opening his envelope.
"College helped me overcome my depression and get back my confidence and self esteem.
"I was always interested in history and the psychologist said it would be a stepping stone to going back to work.
'Delighted'
"I'm delighted with my A grades in History and Geography. I'm looking forward to going to university, and getting on with my life."
The father-of-two nearly died after the gang attacked him outside a pub, where he had stopped to deliver pay packets to his staff.
A full bottle of brandy was smashed over his head, and the gang - who have never been caught - kicked and punched him repeatedly before he blacked out.
When he woke up doctors found serious bleeding on his brain. His speech became stuttered, he suffered from painful headaches and his energy levels plummeted.
