Pupils win iPods for good grades

PUPILS at Tameside schools have been rewarded with iPods for improving their grades.

Secondary schools were given the MP3 players to reward the top five GCSE students who have shown the most improvement since September.

And another five will be given to each school in May for the best-performing pupils.

The initiative - run by the council with sponsorship from online revision company SAM - is aiming to encourage students in the run-up to their exams this summer.

'Best ever'

Coun Ged Cooney said: "Pupils achieved the best ever GCSE results for the borough last year thanks to schools and the LEA working together and developing strategies to improve education attainment.

"We're looking to improve GCSE grades to even higher levels this year and giving the iPods to those pupils who have improved the most is just one of our initiatives."

Jim Taylor, from Tameside's Services for Children and Young People, said: "As well as being a fun accessory, the iPods will help pupils with their GCSE revision.

"All pupils will be able to access a teaching and learning website due to go live in April. They will be able to download files with revision tips."

Other initiatives include texting pupils with motivational messages and reminders about exam dates.

SHOULD pupils be rewarded with presents for improving their grades? Have your say.

I think its nice to reward the good hard working kids for a change, if the school has the money in it's kitty to do it, then yes. I'm sick of hearing about scum-bag kids harrassing decent folk and getting away with it, it must make good kids think "why do I bother ?

A bribe by any other name is still a bribe

My 4 year old niece is already speaking rudimentary French, and neither of her parents are French and they arent teaching it at her primary school. Why because her parents realise she needs to speak a foreign language or she'll lose out in the future. The morons who cant see this and need iPod bribes just turn up and get "good grades" (whatever that means) are still going to end up in low paid menial jobs wheereas the children prepared to work will always get ahead

I received an handshake, a well done and praise from parents and school teachers when I passed my O Levels. Shame, I have just paid 200 notes for a new IPod!

Gregory Happy - the kids who have got good grades have worked hard for them and that's the point. Times have changed as I see nothing wrong with rewarding those who have done well. I too, am sick of seeing these kids who bunk off school and cause crime being treated to courses and holidays by Social Workers and Probation Officers. It's about time we rewarded the good kids who work hard and cause no trouble.
