HEAD teachers and nightclub owners could be given special search powers by the government, as part of a package of tough new measures to counter gun and knife crime.

The crackdown, to be unveiled by Tony Blair today as part of Labour's crime and policing blueprint, will also include an increase in the minimum age for buying knives and replica firearms from 16-18.

Mr Blair said ministers would also consult on compulsory minimum sentences for some knife crimes.
