CHILDREN in Manchester are missing more lessons than anywhere else in the country.
New figures show the city's secondary schools had the worst attendance out of 150 English local authorities, with more than 10 per cent of lessons being missed.
Government figures reveal more than two million hours were being missed in Manchester schools. Most of the absences were due to sickness, term-time holidays and family problems which accounted for more than six per cent of lessons missed. The rest was through truancy, which accounted for 4pc - the worst truancy rate in the country except for Hull.
Manchester has had some of the country's worst attendance figures for several years. Education officials have undertaken a series of measures to keep children in the classroom, including truancy patrols and fines for parents.
However, overall attendance has improved slightly - with this year's absence rate at 10.3 per cent, compared to 10.5 per cent of time last year.
But other areas of Greater Manchester were much closer to the national average of 7.3 per cent. The next worst for absences were Rochdale and Oldham (7.8pc), Tameside (7.7pc), Salford and Bolton (7.3pc), Bury and Stockport (6.9pc), Wigan (6.6pc), and Trafford (6.2pc).
Census
The figures, which are taken from a census of every school in the country, also showed that an incredible 2,570 (11pc) of Manchester's 23,130 secondary pupils were classed as persistently absent, missing more than a fifth of all lessons last year.
Figures for primary school attendance were also bleak.
Manchester's primary schools had the sixth worst overall attendance in the country.
The worst primary schools were in Nottingham.
A total of 6.5pc of time was lost because of absence and 1,250 out of 31,420 primary pupils were classed as persistent absentees.

You know those days in the week - often just after a lengthy holiday - when all the working parents have to make last minute expensive provisions for childcare because the school abrogate their responsibilities.
I mean, you'd think teacher training days could be squeezed into a 6 week summer holiday, the 2 week Easter and Christmas - else during a half term.

Answer? It doesn't because nobody seems ultimately accountable.....and all these kids who have decided education (and all that entails...eg patience, discipline, effort etc) is not for them will have kids of their own....so the downward spiral will continue.
Is Manchester a unique big city> No...so when will the overhaul of the education dept occur? Our councillors are happy to fiddle about with issues like congestion charging, casino bids etc....they really need to knuckle down and get this sorted.
I'm not saying the answers are easy....they are definitely not...but as a starter for ten, I'd separate social services from education and change the person at the top. For a city as big as ours, this is simply not good enough.
No wonder
