FOUR school staff are assaulted every working day in the region.
Last year, more than 867 staff, including teachers, classroom assistants and caretakers, were attacked in Greater Manchester's schools, according to figures obtained under a Freedom of Information request.
Local representatives from the National Union of Teachers said they had dealt with 16 criminal injury cases.
One teaching assistant described how a pupil routinely lashed out at staff and fellow pupils.
She said: "We could expect to be kicked, punched, spat at or hit one or two times a day."
Bryan Beckingham, secretary of the NUT Oldham branch, said: "This is a growing problem. Our members are reporting aggressive incidents to us on a weekly basis and some are scared to go into the classroom, particularly when they have been the victim of a serious assault.
"It can affect their whole life and while very serious incidents are fairly infrequent, more minor physical assaults are happening on a regular basis even in junior and primary schools.
"We carry out an annual survey of violence and disruption in the classroom and that shows the problem is really quite serious. Where we cannot gain the necessary support from headteachers on this, we are prepared to take industrial action to protect our members."
Earlier this year, a male secondary school teacher from Oldham revealed 273 incidents of abusive or threatening behaviour in a classroom diary kept over an 18-month period.
It highlighted one incident in which a pupil, who jumped on the teacher's back and repeatedly punched him on the neck, was excluded for three days.

I have been the subject of physical assults by pupils during mt career, and on non of those occasions have I ever hit back at the pupil involved. I am trained in legal restraint of children, and even when they start off with the 'you can't touch ne' line, I have to smile inwardly when I realise, yes, I can, and yes, I am about to!
Before I am called a screaming liberal, or accused of being a whimp, I can confirm that I boxed at Sale West ABC and also propped for Sale and Waterloo Rugby clubs! I just believe that violence breeds violence. Check your history and see the victory of non-violence for Gandhi and Martin Luther King.
The answer to violent pupils lies with the parents, good parenting produces good kids the majority of the time. Unfortunately the reverse is also true - I refer to my earlier comments regarding the confiscation of a mobile phone after it disrupted a lesson!I also believe in residential education for the most dangerous children, primarilly for their own good so they do not harm others.

the world's gone mad (05/12/2007 at 23:15)
I have finally had enough of thinking that trying to help a student achieve something with their life is something that they will appreciate, because of the attitudes I face from a large number of students, and senior management unwilling to make a stand against their behaviour. I have no idea what a student needs to do to even be strongly rebuked, never mind excluded, and this uncertainty, added to the fact that students are so quick to fabricate a counter-claim when they know reports of their behaviour have been passed on, has meant that I am now looking for a career elsewhere.
