Top Manchester school places ‘like gold dust’ after mini baby boom

Manchester council is conducting a city-wide review of classroom places as it prepares for a surge in pupil numbers.

Many of the city’s 127 primary schools are already at bursting point and would be unable to accommodate more students without being expanded.

Governors at a private school have resigned after parents revolted in support of their headteacher.

Hundreds of parents at Bridgewater School in Worsley, Salford, voted to back Judy Nairn – who had quit as head in a row over payments to one of the school’s board members.

For the first time in years Manchester schools are no longer languishing at the very bottom of the tables. More than half of Manchester students (52 per cent) now met the government standard – up an astonishing 15 points from 37pc four years ago, although still below the national average.

Judy Nairn, who has worked at the school for 26 years, is understood to have clashed with governors over the decision to hire the school’s chairman of governors James McGrath to provide services in addition to his role.

As well as his unpaid post as governor, Mr McGrath, a former deputy head, carried out extra paid work as an ‘education consultant’ – and is believed to have been paid £40,000 over 12 months.

Judy Nairn stunned staff and parents at the Bridgewater School in Worsley, Salford, by handing in her notice.

She is understood to have resigned in protest over payments - thought to be about £40,000 - that were made over 12 months to James McGrath, the school's chair of governors. Mr McGrath also works for the school as an education consultant.

Seven years ago Crossacres primary school in Wythenshawe was in special measures after inspectors ruled that teachers were ‘failing to give its pupils an acceptable standard of education’.

The school came out of special measures in 2004 but suffered a hammer blow when the nursery was burnt down in a suspected arson attack three years ago.
