White middle-class women teachers feel out of their depth tackling racism in the classroom. That is the key finding of a new report by researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University.

A team led by equality expert Peter Hick found many teachers were unable to deal with racist bullying and name-calling because of their backgrounds.

Plans for a proposed new primary school backed by Manchester Grammar School and developer Urban Splash have gained enough support to enter the next stage.

The 500-year-old independent school is backing plans to create the primary school in Ancoats. But supporters of the scheme had initially struggled to sign up enough pupils - with only 26 out of the target of 60 families at the start of this month.
