A GIRL who lost her sight a year ago is to follow her dream of going to university.
Sumaira Naseem, 19, has suffered eye problems since birth, but went blind in November.
Despite this, Sumaira has won a place to study English literature at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Although unable to read the novels and plays required for her English A-level at Xaverian College, she became familiar with the works by listening to audio books.
Sumaira, from Victoria Park, near Rusholme, said: "Since last year I have not been able to read or write. It has been difficult but I have had a lot of support from the college and teachers.
"I thought about quitting but I want people to see that you shouldn't quit just because you have a problem."
College staff said the teenager, who won an Aim Higher award for her resilience earlier this year, has never complained or asked for special treatment. Her family said they are proud of Sumaira's achievements.

It just goes to show that if you want something bad enough you can achieve it against the odds.
It's great to see a young person praised for achieving something, instead of everyone thinking the youth of today are all yobs.
I wish Sumaira a successful and happy university career and beyond.
