Facebook 'troll' jailed after targeting Jade Goody tribute page

Colm Coss, 36, targeted sites including a Facebook page set up for the late reality TV star Jade Goody, who died of cancer last year.
A pervert who left sick messages on tribute sites for dead people has been jailed.

Colm Coss, 36, targeted sites including a Facebook page set up for the late reality TV star Jade Goody, who died of cancer last year.

Coss, who is unemployed and from Ardwick, also bombarded sites for a dead American, the victim of a fatal car crash in Australia and a Canadian murder victim.

Details of his horrifying posts - which boasted of imaginary acts of paedophilia and necrophilia - were read out in sickening detail at Manchester Magistrates Court.

The court heard Coss wrote them simply because he found it 'amusing'.

Sentencing Coss to 18 weeks in prison, Magistrate Pauline Salisbury said he was not sorry for what he had done and that he had "derived pleasure" from hearing details of his crimes read out in court.

She said although sentencing guidelines suggested 12 weeks in prison, the seriousness of the offences meant that he should serve 26 weeks, dropping to 18 weeks because of his early guilty plea.

Earlier this month Coss was found guilty of sending malicious communications that were grossly offensive under the Communications Act 2003 which governs the internet, email, mobile phone calls and text messaging.

He was arrested at his home on Langport Avenue in June 28 this year after sending letters to neighbours bragging that he was an "internet troll" - someone who trawls the internet trying to cause offence, often under an assumed name.

Paul Mitchell, prosecuting, said: "[The letters] contained two colour pictures [of Coss] with typed letters informing neighbours that he lived at this address and that in internet terms he was a 'troll'."

After his arrest, Coss repeatedly refused to answer police questions while being interviewed. But he then wrote to an officer in the case admitting that the he had made the internet posts.

Mr Mitchell said: "He found the comments amusing, and ... said that they gave him no sexual arousal but that he enjoyed the comments made in reaction."

Mr Mitchell said Coss particularly enjoyed provoking "more educated" people.

"The harm and upset that this can cause is obvious," Mr Mitchell added.

Leanne Press, defending, said Mr Coss "had a history of mental health issues" and asked for a further report into Coss' mental state before sentencing.

But magistrates decided there was no need for a further psychiatric assessment of Coss and remanded him in custody immediately.

At a time where you can beat a guy unconscious and not go to jail, a loser who trolls the internet is being sent there.... Jesus.

so the thugs who beat up and abused that poor autistic boy get no jail time and this guy gets 18 weeks for writing filth, is it me or is there no logic in these decisions.

So he gets 18 weeks for posting rubbish on facebook whilst scum who torture people don't spend an hour in prison.

I know which crime I'd prefer to see the perpetrator sent to prison for!

Last month the MEN told us of a criminal called Karen Pickford who had just been convicted of drunk driving for the third time. She had also been convicted of assault for the third time, and for a public order offence too. Despite her criminal record she received a suspended sentence.

This Facebook criminal, Colm Coss, has been jailed.

Which one would I prefer to be at liberty? The worst this Facebbok criminal would probably do to me or any of my friends and family would be to upset or offend, possibly causing a period of distress. The thuggish drunk driver could kill, as well as causing a lifetime of grief for others.

If we are short of prison places I think I'd take my chances with Cross wandering the streets of Manchester and have violent drunken louts like Pickford locked up to prevent death or injury.

The British justice system is seriously screwed up, while i dont for one minute condone this mans actions, is it really in the tax payer best interest to lock him up at considerable cost for 18 weeks, while people who commit violent crimes get off with community sentences?
How come all the people who were calling Raul Moat a hero on facebook for shooting an unarmed Police officer and murdering his ex's new partner can get away with that without even a police investigation when there was an equal number of people who would find this distasteful. It seems a very knee jerk reaction to what really amounts to nothing more than a mentally unstable man being a nusance but ultimately no one was harmed by his actions. I find it a frightening precidence that if someone writes something online that people find distateful then the writer can get 18 weeks in jail and a criminal record for it, this is heading towards a communist state where if you say something the authorities dont like you go to prison.

I am not condoning this bloke in anyway..... BUT..... 18 weeks in jail for posting messages on an open internet forum (free speech?) that could be deleted.

Certainly not right in the head. He should have chosen some other crime to satisfy his abnormality of mind.
A serious assault say, or even kidnap & torture. He would have walked away with a very strict warning about his behaviour & community service.
Britain is not only on the way down, it has almost reached 'rock bottom'.

on the plus side, no need for moderators anymore, anyone posts anything off topic or offensive and we'll just stick em in strangeways. Next month we'll set up a blacklist of words with a fixed tariff of on the spot fines.

your tax dollars at work eh

Good on the courts for locking-up this ne'er-do-well. I, for one, can't wait until the boffins develop a chip, to be compulsorily implanted in everybody's brains, that can detect such prurient thoughts and report them to the authorities so that the offending yob can be taken into custody and summarily imprisoned before anyone's feelings can be hurt. If we're very, very lucky, the chip will be able to suppress such thoughts and make everyone a right-thinking individual. What a glorious day that will be.

No need for further psychiatric assessment? The man has no remorse whatsoever. In fact, he got a 'high' off this. This has all the hallmarks he will become a repeat offender in future.

'Proper Sentences' is right; this 'man' isn't just a nuisance he's twisted and nuts. Unfortunately more is needed than just a jail sentence as if he gets a kick out of doing sick things like this, he'll just start a new idea when he gets out.
