Thugs jailed after dad brutally attacked in front of family

Craig O'Brien, 20, of Denehurst Road, Greave, has been jailed for five years at Bolton crown court after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Three men have been jailed after a savage attack on a family in which a dad was stabbed seven times outside his house.

The victim, 40, had been heading home for tea with his son, 18, and 10-year-old daughter when they were attacked in the street.

He suffered stab wounds to his head, chest and arm.

His wife, 39, was hit with a piece of wood when she opened the door of their house in Rochdale.

Lights on the family's car were also smashed and a brick was thrown at the family during the attack. The boy was also set upon.

Detectives launched an investigation after the attack happened on Greave Avenue in the town on October 19, 2008.

Now Craig O'Brien, 20, of Denehurst Road, Greave, has been jailed for five years at Bolton crown court after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Graham O'Brien, 28, also of Denehurst Road, Greave, has been jailed for nine months and Christopher Walsh, 22, of Verdun Crescent, Rochdale, was jailed for 15 months.

Both pleaded guilty to affray.

The court heard O'Brien was seen using a knife during the attack. Walsh and Graham O'Brien were also involved.

Det Con John Schofield, from Rochdale CID, said: "This was a vile attack on a family who were just returning home for tea.

"The whole family were subjected to a ferocious attack by a group of men that not only left the dad with lasting scars from being stabbed but have left his family with deep-rooted emotional scars that may never fully heal.

"I hope that the result received today will help to some extent in allowing the family to move on and also send a clear message to the people who live on the Greave estate that such violent behaviour will not be tolerated."

the only message this sentence has sent out is that you can nearly murder someone, attack the family and you can go to a holiday camp for a couple of years,it doesn't matter what the reason for the attack was the fact is this little low life thug will come home and laugh about it,worst part about it is the fact that it is the judges who are the cowards in these cases, this country is lawless with a bunch of wimps in the so called "justice" system who wont hand out propper sentences, they want to start earning the money our taxes pay them,,

Ridiculous and pathetic! What exactly do you have to do in Britain these days to recieve a sentence that fits the crime. This could've just as easilly have resulted in murder. Are these so-called judges "nuts"?

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGHH!!!!! The law need changing and soon. Yet again we hear people involved in savage crimes more or less get away with punitive sentencing. And what do we hear the crime figure are going down. Bunkum absolute bunkum. The only relief is that these thugs or dare I say have gaol time romantics. Will just bide their time not even giving a fig. The law has got to change and so does justice to reflect 21st century.

Our ancestors dished out the correct punishment for human parasites like these animals, hung, drawn and quartered !

Don't blame the judges, they just follow the guidelines. If you want to bring this up to anyone, feel free to talk to our local MP. The "sentencing council" is a part of the MoJ.

I too am absolutely outraged at the crime and the punishment, but I am not totally suprised by the sentence. I too think that someone stabbing someone else in the head and chest should be charged with attempted murder with a minimum of 15 years with no parole.

Perhaps plea bargining entered the equation as the intent of the attacker may have been hard to prove.

As usual, nowhere hear long enough sentences.

Will these families (ie those of the scum) be kicked out of their coiuncil houses? No the council is too scared

I don't understand the sentencing, the crime is "GBH with intent". Intent to do what exactly? You don't attack someone with a knife with an intent to do anything other than kill them. Clearly the O'Brien's and Walshes of Greave don't add anything to the local community and the whole town will be well rid of them.....but only for a short time. Hopefully the local community can have a better quality of life while these "GBH-with intenters" are away.

The O'Brien and Walsh family are making us all poorer.

Ah, there it is, the long awaited defensive comment from a 'mate' and can you believe it, the spelling is wrong too. That said, using a keyboard or blackberry is pretty tricky without opposable thumbs!

For all you people claiming that these boys are scum, let me just inform you that they are far from scum. The Observer as twisted everything that happened. So don't leave your nasty comments when you do not know the truth about what happened.

You dont no what they did though do you, you read stories like this then make your daft comments, go back home and sort your own kids out before you start making comments because you dont no nothing, the media twists everything, think of the lads family's and how their feeling before you start calling them scum, the scum around here is you sad people sitting at your desks at work writing stupid comments and calling other peoples families.

When did stabbing some one 7 times not count as attempted murder?

Another "plead guilty deal". The CPS make me sick.

As some one who grew up on Greave i know what its like, you cant "twist" what they did, stabbing a man then attacking his wife and son. Scumbags.
