Hit-run driver killed pedestrian in 70mph crash

A speeding hit-and-run driver was seen ‘laughing and giggling’ as he fled after a crash in which a young dad died.

Zaffer Kurshid, 21, was doing 70mph in a 30mph zone when he hit Robert Allen, then drove  away leaving him for dead.

He was jailed for four years at Bolton Crown Court.

Witnesses said Mr Allen, 36, of Bedford Street, Bolton,  was thrown more than 40 yards when he was mown down on Chorley New Road. He died at the scene.

Kurshid was described by a judge as an ‘impatient and frustrated driver’. He passed his test just four months before the crash last October.

The court was told that he has a previous conviction for driving without a licence.

Kurshid’s brother Asad, 24, who owned the powerful Volvo S60 involved in the collision, was given an eight-month sentence, suspended for two years, after he pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice.

The court heard that he created a fake receipt claiming the car had been sold when he heard what had happened.

Disqualified

He devised the ‘short-lived’ scheme in panic because having a previous conviction for driving while disqualified, he believed officers would think he was the driver, it was said.

Both brothers, who live on Kilnhurst Road, Bolton, handed themselves in hours later.

Zaffer Kurshid, who was in the car with a girlfriend, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. He was also banned from the road for six years.

Peter Barr, prosecuting, said Mr Allen, who had a daughter, was returning from an off-licence with his dog when he was struck.

One witness told police: “The car looked as though it was flying.” A driver who saw the collision stopped and called police and paramedics. Mr Barr said another witness saw Kurshid and a girlfriend getting out of the vehicle after he abandoned it near the Bolton School. He said the witness saw them ‘laughing and giggling’.

Jailing Zaffer Kurshid, Judge William Morris said: “You were responsible for this tragic death. You were speeding and travelling at 70mph. You admitted that you did so for the excitement.”

His brother Asad was also ordered to complete 200 hours’ of community service.

Taking a life in britain means nothing? its time that we had real laws to protect innocent people from idiots like these. We need to treat accidents like this as murder. As soon as you leave a person after a accident that should be murder...Once again the innocents and the family they leave behind have a life sentence not the criminals.

4 YEARS - WHAT A JOKE !!

Killed an innocent and thought it was funny. Victim gets no life afterwards, and poor family & friends have to live with it. Killer gets 4 years, most likely reduced to 2. Sounds about right for this country. The system is as backward and as savage as the criminal.

4 years - seems harsh!

Four years is a ridiculously lenient sentence for a crime like this. He should have been put away for about ten years. Nobody does 70 in a 30 zone by mistake. It has to be deliberate.

And his thick brother with his sad scheme to falsify documents should have been jailed too.

We don't need scum like this on our streets.

Another soft sentence. This wasn't a mistake or a bit or recklessness. It was sheer stupidity and irresponsibility, driving at 70mph showing off. And as he had been charged for doing it before he clearly didn't learn anything. And he tried to pervert the course of justice. 4 years in jail and out in 18 months. No justice.

4 years, pathetic.

4 years for an innocent life - it's a disgrace. Should be 10 and then deportation if he's not a national.

I would rather see 6 years for the driver and 1 for the brother. The girlfriend passenger I'd give a suspended sentence to. I realise under UK law this won't happen, but perhaps it about time it did.

Someone's died here. The killer needs longer inside, but the 2 mentioned above have, in my view, got blood on their hands too. Let's make criminals fear the law instead of laugh at it and manipulate our courts!

And gets a suspended sentence....What message is that?

This animal needed to be given ten years not only for taking a life but also for leaving a daughter without a farther.Life is cheap?

This is murder, he knew what he was doing travelling at great speeds and should take the proper consiquences
he killed an innocent man; therefore he should have stood trail for murder, that would have wiped the giggling smile off his face.
better still all his benefits should have been stopped.

Murder...pure and simple!
Should have been charged as such and if guilty, given a life sentence!
Then,if and when released,a lifetime driving ban!

If i ever decide to commit murder i know how i am going to do it! Moe than over, maintain you did not mean to kill the person and walk out after a couple of years with good behaviour!

This was no accident. That brainless moron knowingly drove a vehicle at excessive speeds, knowing full well that having just passed his test, he in no way had the skill or experience to handle it. Any idiot can drive fast, it's easy. The skill comes in controlling the vehicle if something untoward happens, a skill this lunatic didn't possess.
He should have been charged with manslaughter and caged a darned sight longer than four poxy years. For God's sake..they were seen laughing and joking after just killing a perfectly innocent man. This scum and his brother clearly have a blatant disregard for the law, having both driven illegally in the past, and both deserved much stiffer sentences but yet again, an innocent family gets a life sentence while these vermin get slapped on the wrist..Pathetic and disgusting.

Disgusting - 4 Years!! that is one hell of a joke so he gets 4 years will probably do 2, hes banned fro 6 years will be jailed for 2 of them and hes had a previous conviction of driving without a licence! he will do it again if hes banned and unfortunalty may kill someone else! Well done to our justice system you really are a pathetic joke!!

He should have been given at least a year for every year of Mr Allen's life, 4 years is an appallingly lenient sentence for low life like this!
