More than 300 guests gathered at the Commonwealth Arch venue, under Victoria Railway Station, for the ninth Manchester Evening News Annual Recruitment Advertising Awards.
The theme of this year's ceremony was "The Commonwealth", and with the Guardian Media Group (GMG), publisher of the Manchester Evening News, being the official media sponsor of the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games, the venue was uniquely decorated in the colours of the Commonwealth countries.
A steel band greeted guests upon arrival, amid palm trees from the Caribbean, flowers and skins from Africa and bamboo from Asia.
Mark Rix, deputy managing director of the M.E.N., said: "This prestigious event is the highlight in the UK recruitment industry social calendar. The awards are designed to recognise the very high creative standards in recruitment advertising that has appeared in the Manchester Evening News over the previous 12 months.
"The awards programme runs throughout the year and this gala event, which goes from strength to strength, is a celebration of the industry's outstanding talent.
"This was a very special night. The Manchester Evening News is fiercely proud of its position as the UK's leading regional daily newspaper for recruitment advertisers and, as well as recognising talent, it is our way of thanking respectively our agency and advertising clients." The Manchester Evening News publishes an average of 1,300 recruitment advertisements each week and our judges faced a daunting task throughout the year in selecting the winners. The judges were Paul Mawdsley, MD of Mawdsley Consultancy; Andy Cheetham, creative director of Cheetham Bell JWT; Sheelagh Geraghty, HR services manager of CIS; Geoffrey Thomas Shaw, a graphic design lecturer at Salford University; Louise Mather, group training manager of the Guardian Media Group and Terry Biltcliffe, training director for Greater Manchester Newspapers.
