A pilot web-based initiative is hoping to help Manchester bridge the digital divide.
The Dot hopes to attract volunteers with Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills to the project to help community organisations embrace new technologies and help individuals get to grips with computers.
Volunteers can register online and can be anyone from ICT professionals to employees who simply use a word processor or spreadsheet every day.
The scheme is currently being developed and tested in the Manchester area before a nationwide rollout.
The Dot is a voluntary pilot scheme co-ordinated by IT recruitment specialist Computer People and backed by Manchester Metropolitan University and Business in the Community.
Computer People hopes to team up with other key business partners across the country. Commercial director in the Manchester office Helen Ackroyd said: ''Voluntary work is of enormous mutual benefit to both volunteers and the local community.''
