Sir David was a winner in the Power 100 competition of public sector big hitters, for his work as chairman of Cambridgeshire Horizons, a regeneration and development company responsible for building 47,500 homes in the area by 2016.
He explains: "I was headhunted for the role about two-and-a-half years ago and put a team together. I was a housing minister, so obviously knew the sector well.
"I knew nothing of the nomination for this award and am absolutely delighted to win it on behalf of the team. I consider this award to be a tribute to the successful partnership between the five district councils and county council in Cambridgeshire."
Sir David is chairman of Manchester stockbrokers W H Ireland, a director of education group Nord Anglia and sits on the regional board of ITV Granada. Also nominated were Sir Howard Bernstein, chief executive of Manchester city council, and Greater Manchester fire chief Barry Dixon. Tweet
