Bernstein joins board of Sport & Leisure Group

LEISURE Former Manchester City chairman David Bernstein has joined the board of the Sports & Leisure Group, the developer and operator of multi sports and leisure facilities.

The 63-year-old London-based accountant has a distinguished history in the leisure sector, having served on the boards of sports brand company Pentland Group, French Connection, and Blacks Leisure. He will serve as non-executive chairman.

In his time at City, David brought much-needed stability to the club after its descent into the lower reaches of football, and helped restore it to the Premiership.

He also played a key role in the deal with Manchester city council to take City from Maine Road to the City of Manchester Stadium.

The Sports & Leisure Group operates two brands in two large and growing UK leisure markets: Roko Health Clubs, the "premium affordable" family health clubs, and PlayFootball, the "new generation" small-sided football centres.

To date, SLG has developed four health clubs in Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Nottingham and Gillingham, with a combined full paying membership in excess of 18,000 and six PlayFootball centres in Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Preston, Blackpool Luton and Liverpool.
