Members of Greater Manchester Chamber's building and development section, applauded their committee's decision to choose Manchester University's research centre, the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, and the Beetham Tower as joint winners of their Building of the Year award for 2006.
The awards, which were announced at the section's annual dinner, will be presented by city council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein at a lunch in January.
Steve Burne, of AEW Architects and chairman of the section, said: "These are not design awards, but in our opinion they are the developments that best show our region as a centre of construction excellence.
"This is the first year that we have had two winners for the award but, after weeks of deliberation, the committee took the unusual step of selecting joint winners."
The é38m University of Manchester research facility can accommodate more than 500 scientists in up to 85 research groups. The project represents a major milestone in the University's Project Unity development plan and has made a major contribution to Manchester's status as a `knowledge capital'.
With 47 storeys, the 168.87m Beetham Tower is the tallest structure outside London and the tallest residential building in the UK. The building features a 285-bed, five-star hotel and 219 apartments. Tweet

THIS SO CALLED INNOVATIVE STRUCTURE IS AN ABOMINATION>>>
This may be a construction 'wonder' but it IS ugly. It sticks up like a gravestone on the Manchester skyline. It's a great big blot on the landscape of our fair city. It can be seen for miles around, but who wants to look at it. I certainly do not. DO YOU find it a thing of beauty??
Yup. Sure is ugly. Completely ruins the view down St Anne's Square. Come to think of it, it ruins the view of Heaton Park from Heaton Hall as well.
