Airport’s finance chief to bow out

Kevin Feddy

MANCHESTER Airport finance director Norman Renfrew is to retire at the end of next month after 15 years of holding the purse-strings.

His career highlights include leading the team that raised the finance for Terminal Two and the second runway, and being involved in the acquisition of East Midlands and Bournemouth International Airports, which now form an integral part of the Manchester Airport Group.

Manchester Airport chairman, Coun Brian Harrison, said Norman had made an enormous contribution to the development of the company, and would be sorely missed.

He praised Norman's "enthusiastic and energetic personality, and his ability to combine providing a steady, guiding hand, with fairness, professionalism and a sense of humour."

Leading role

Coun Harrison added: "Norman has played a leading role in the development of Manchester Airport and the airport group. He has helped us to navigate the Airport through some of the most testing and successful times of the company's development."

A chartered accountant, Scotsman Norman qualified in 1970.

Before he joined the airport in 1987, he worked as financial controller at Britoil in Glasgow. Married to Muriel, the couple have a daughter, Fiona, and a son, Gavin. Following his retirement Norman plans to visit Gavin in Australia, and to spend more time enjoying his hobbies of sailing and golf.

During his time at the airport, it has grown from handling six million passengers a year to 18 million, and into a business with turnover of more than 300m.

He said: "I've had a very challenging and enjoyable career at the airport, and havemade many friends within the aviation and financial sector.

There is certainly a glow of satisfaction of having been a part of such a highly successful business, and I wish the directors and staff well for the future."
