Lufthansa passenger numbers flying high out of Manchester

Lufthansa carried a record number of people in and out of Manchester last year, the German airline announced.

The carrier saw an 8.5 per cent increase in passengers to 697,915, during 2011.

It announced the figures as it gears up to launch a new daily service from Manchester to Berlin, on top of its existing flights to Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf.

UK and Ireland general manager Christian Schindler said: “We have reaffirmed our commitment to Manchester by announcing a new daily flight to Berlin from June 3 to coincide with the opening of the new Berlin-Brandenburg “Willy Brandt” Airport, where we are making a major investment.

“As well as offering passengers quick and easy access to many of the main German cities, we continue to ensure that our flights to and from Manchester offer the shortest possible onward connection times to our worldwide network through our main hubs of Frankfurt and Munich as well as our developing mini-hub at Düsseldorf.”

Overall, 106.3 million passengers flew with the airlines that make up the Lufthansa Group - Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, bmi and Germanwings – during 2011, 7.5 per cent more than in 2010.

Lufthansa and Air France/KLM are succesful in the major regions out of London, of course. It is very simple - they feed their international network with those UK passengers, BA left behind : and that's a lot ! I am a BA customer for many years and I don't understand their strategy, really. All these passengers, using Lufthansa etc, are lost for BA. Who will stop the current management of BA and IAG ?!
