BBC North deputy Richard Deverell is not moving to Salford

BBC North’s deputy boss will not be moving from London to MediaCity in Salford later this year.

Richard Deverell is stepping down as chief operating officer for BBC North to take on a new role at the corporation – in West London.

Alice Webb, who is currently programme director, will take over Mr Deverell’s job at the new Salford Quays headquarters.

The announcement comes amid claims from BBC1 controller Danny Cohen that budget cuts are leading to an exile of talent to other channels.

Peter Salmon, director of BBC North, said: “Richard has been critical in the creation of BBC North and from the very beginning he was an untiring advocate for the move.

“His drive, passion and unwavering belief that audiences in the north needed to be better served by the BBC helped keep the project on course.”

Don't do as I do.........do as I say. And where is Mr. Salmon in the pecking order? And will he be coming to Salford Quays? Sounds like they're running BBC North-London.

What a startling revelation -- a media luvvy who despite his 'passionate beliefs' is not prepared to leave the Smoke. And now they have started bleating about not being paid enough and claiming that no one is prepared to take jobs with a £200K salary. Never let it be said that the liberal elite is out of touch with reality.

His contract should not be renewed and he shoud go and find work elsewhere if the north isn't good enough for him and the same to any of the other southern softies who wont make the move. Granada (before it became part of a new national ITV single region) used to make some of the best programmes in the country and that used to be proud to have a logo that said "From the North". Unfortunately, with the likes of Jeremy Kyle nowadays, it can no longer claim to produce great TV. But if Granada could do it in the past, why not southern Jessies? But BBC can we have a drama department up here too please, it was sickening to see Life on Mars filmed in Manchester but made by BBC Wales.

I take it none of you have ever left a job to take a different one?

And I also take it none of you were critical of Eric Pickles when he said people should move around the country to find jobs.

Seeing we have areas of Manchester with new names such as Eastlands, New Islington. How about Salford Quays changing theirs to reflect new hip and funky yuff culture. London Salford Airport or Aqualand better still New Chelsea. By the sound of all these reports of people unwilling to come. Maybe the better option of changing the identity to attract.
