Sunday paper warned after `free CD' offer

THE Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint about a misleading offer in the Manchester-based Sunday Sport newspaper.

The paper ran a front page promotional blurb suggesting that a free CD was being given away inside every copy.

Instead, readers had to pay '1.99 for posting and packing and send a coupon to the newspaper. An ASA spokesman said: "Most readers were likely to infer from the front page flash that a free CD was in that day's paper.

Because it was not, the authority concluded that the front page flash was misleading and told the promoters to consult the CAP Copy Advice team.

It warned that goods could only be described as "free" if readers were charged no more than the current rate of postage.
