THE next phase of a £60m retail regeneration scheme in Greater Manchester has been given the go-ahead by planning chiefs.
Salford council has backed proposals by Derwent Holdings for phase two of the Ellesmere Centre scheme in Walkden.
It will involve the creation of 54,000sq ft of new shops, walkways with travelators and improved car parking.
When the entire project if completed, it will provide around 2,000 jobs, anchored by Tesco.
Derwent Holdings is also pressing ahead with a scheme to revitalise the White City Retail Park in Trafford, supporting 700 jobs.

Good points. And are you also aware of some of the other suggestions for Salford?
Amongst Salford City Council's strategic (Town and Country) planning objectives is the building of new homes:
"v. To deliver a net increase of 33,750 dwellings
vi. To deliver a net increase of at least 9,500 houses"

NB. These objectives are in line with (mandated by?) central government policy.
Additionally, there are suggestions within Salford's same Draft Core Strategy document for the provision of "employment development" - aka commercial property for the provision of what most of us would probably call a Business Park. Interestingly, these proposals would involve the loss of approximately 40 hectares of agricultural greenfield land to make way for the (presumably much needed) "employment development" (remember: Business Park) area.
