Curtain manufacturer Bartell buys rival

A CURTAIN and blinds manufacturer based in Manchester today announced the takeover of a north east rival which adds annual revenues of £1.2m to the group.

Bartell Contract Furnishings, based on Oldham Road, Newton Heath, has bought Cottage Contract Furnishers, which has its headquarters in North Shields.

The sum paid is undisclosed.

Cottage, which employs 17 staff, makes curtains and blinds and is a main UK distributor for Silent Gliss cubicle curtain tracking systems which are used in hospitals and health centres.

Bartell, which has 21 employees and turnover of £1.8m, supplies the healthcare, education, local authority and corporate sectors. It was established by Tim Barlow, 50, and James Mitchell, 44, in 1994.

The duo also own Excel Manufacturing, based in Huddersfield, which supplies blinds to retailers and contractors. That business turns over £3.2m and employs 80 staff.

Funding for the Cottage Contract Furnishers acquisition was provided by NatWest.

Manchester advisers who worked on the deal included Elaine Charrôt, and Andrew Sturge, of law firms Hill Dickinson and Turner Parkinson respectively.

I think this is excellent news. It's good to see any local company thrive in any part of a recession. I remember when these gentlemen started out. They where a spin-off company and now look at them. Good business accumen, determination and balls; its all it took and its what they've got. Well done, boys!!
