The Neighbourhood pushing technology to the max

A DESIGN studio based in Manchester has seen revenues soar since its inception in 2006 and is racing ahead of its business plan.

The Neighbourhood prides itself on pushing the boundaries of creativity by maximising technological developments.

The business, which is based in Manchester's High Street, was established by four friends who share a passion for design, animation, architecture, contemporary culture and science.

The company - which now has 11 full-time employees - turned over £227,000 in its first 12 months and is forecasting revenues of £850,000 this year.

In addition to producing a popular advert featuring a disembodied hand which was used to advertise the Sony PSP, the company has made films for Manchester City and property developer Urban Splash.

It is also working on project with celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal. Its success has led to it being a finalist in the young business category of this year's M.E.N. Business of the Year awards.

One of the company's founders, John Humphreys, said: "We class ourselves as a part-creative agency and part-production studio - and provide both services but don't claim to be exclusively either.

"We direct and produce intelligent, memorable and lovable works through illustration, animation and film. But our aim is to always ensure that we bring an extra dimension to our clients' campaigns and I think that this is one of the main reasons why we have been successful.

"We've also worked on some of the animated pieces which are used by CBBC as well as Channel Five."

The Neighbourhood also produces 3D graphics for architects. Its innovative approach towards business has seen it win 19 awards, including best overall architectural film award and `industry choice' award at the architectural 3D awards.

It was also recently selected as one of the UK's `top creative companies' with high growth potential by the government's innovation organisation NESTA.

John added: "We've found that, with animation, there's a constant hunger to exploit what's new, and we are at the forefront of that."
