CHEMICALS firm Hockley International has posted a forecast-beating rise in annual turnover to a record £18.1m.

The Poynton, Cheshire firm, which was established by Frank Howard 30 years ago, said sales for the year to June 30 rocketed from £8.4m. Its gross margin climbed from £1.16m to £2.1m.

Hockley, established in a spare bedroom as Mostyn Chemicals, exports insecticides, weed killers and fungicides to over 90 countries.

Its key markets include Nigeria, Ghana, Yemen and Uruguay.

The firm's 14-strong team is responsible for the design, development, sales and marketing of Hockley's products, which are manufactured under outsourcing agreements.

Last month the company picked up an international trade accolade at the Chemicals Northwest awards in Manchester and is looking to increase exports in target areas including Central and South America, as well as West Africa. Later this month it will exhibit at an international trade fair in Washington DC as part of its overseas sales drive. Its success abroad is partly due to having a high number of staff able to speak French and Spanish, said Mr Howard.
