Two years ago, the first MIF attracted 200,000 visitors over two weeks and generated £28.8m for the city's economy. And Manchester city council, which helps fund its organisation, is confident it will have a similar impact this year.
A report into the first festival drafted by Morris Hargreaves McIntyre said that it not only had a major economic impact but also raised the profile of the city both nationally and internationally. And, for its investment of £2.3m, the city had benefited from £12m worth of positive global media exposure.
Biggest beneficiaries are likely to be bars and restaurants but hotels are also reporting an increase in bookings. Ticket sales in 2007 generated £1.3m and organisers say sales this year have gone well, with several performances sold out.
Several locally-based firms are seeing direct benefit. Blackburn-based Banner Bags is again producing a range made from recycled Festival banners and sold via the MIF website. Events company TLC has organised tonight's launch party for 600 guests. Boss Liz Taylor said: "It will reflect the eclectic festival programme."
