Tony's track record

 Tony Hughes
HE'S only been motor racing for two years, but this weekend company boss Tony Hughes will be tackling one of America's most famous race tracks.

Tony, a regular driver with the Sandbach-based Speedworks Motorsport Team, is taking part in the notorious Sebring Endurance Challenge in Florida, in a Ginetta G50.

It's the first time a British team has ever competed, and the already glorious car has been given some extra zip and modifications by the Speedworks crew, whose owner, Christian Dick, will partner Tony in the race. "I've looked at some in-car footage from Sebring, and I must say it does look daunting," said Tony.

"But one of the reasons I took up motor racing in 2007 was to race at famous tracks. I've done all of the circuits in the UK and last year took the G50 to Spa in Belgium, where we had a ball. Racing in America will be an experience I will remember for a long time!"

Hughes is managing director of Hughes Safety Showers in Stockport, which sponsors the Speedworks G50.

"At work, our business is all about safety. On the race track we're always pushing to go faster, but safety is still our number one priority," he said reassuringly.

The 3.7 mile Sebring track is the oldest road course in North America and was originally a Second World War training air base for B-17 bombers. Many of the great motor racing legends have driven there, including Mario Andretti, Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio, as well as showbusiness legends Steve McQueen, Gene Hackman and Paul Newman.

Ginetta Cars, of Leeds, which builds the G50, is providing spares for the trip, and Speedworks mechanics Nick Bailey and Spencer Aldridge will be on hand to make sure the cars perform on the big day.
